What I Played Today: December 15

Ar Tonelico, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved

Quick comment of Your Shape, because I haven’t actually been playing it lately, but popped it back in tonight. (only 7 more sessions to go! *vomits*) Must say that a lot of the game is crap, the fitness classes only give you two options, Yoga (which is dull and silly) and boxing, and the gym games are lame-o, but especially the hula hoop one, which basically boils down to looking like a moron for 30 seconds while some arbitrary crap happens on your television. Just commenting how pointless a lot of this is. I did find the balance one pretty interesting, too bad it doesn’t account for weight and you have pretty much no ability to catch tumbling blocks.

Enough of that! I played some more Ar Tonelico today, because I thought to myself, “Man, I should really return that.” But somehow, I managed to convince myself to hang onto it for another weekend. It wasn’t the story, or the confusing crafting mechanics, or the artwork (which looks like it was created, oh, you know, six year ago), or the pacing. (Wait, my first boss fight happens AFTER I assume I’m homefree and out of the death forest?) I think it was just the combat mechanics, as inscrutable as they are, once you get a singing lady in your party. She doesn’t have a turn; you instead tell her to do x, and she’ll either do it right away, or need to build up energy. If you do something just right, it also makes your basic attacks better somehow. It’s just odd enough that I need to experiment with it.
