Diaspora
Roleplaying day, which was consumed mostly of character creation, first with D&D and Mage, and then to a cooperative creation of a small star cluster for the hard science fiction game Diaspora, using the FATE system. In this, we all rolled some dice to determine the technology level, environment, and resources of the solar system we would contributing to the cluster. We got some interesting things out of it, from the hostile planet Quilok, which is inhabited by savage barbarians protecting the valuable metal on their planet, to Celestria, a Space Vegas that appears to be the central focus of the universe, and my creature, Utolis, a small rosette of planets around a single star dedicated to the arts and proper society, who view all other solar systems as merely an alternate version of their own, perfect universe.
When we got to actual character creation, I liked Utolis, so I created another nerd character, a writer who has had a pretty terrible life, just doing his job of being the most disliked person in his company (he was a professional speculator, who had to come up with ideas that were guaranteed to fail), when an unfortunate accident kills his boss and he runs into one of the other PCs, who happens to look exactly like his boss. According to Utolis culture, he is now employed by the other PC, and follows him out of the universe into a much more hostile world he doesn’t understand, which he isn’t terribly happy about. I don’t know what it is with me and playing characters that are absolutely useless in combat, but here I am again. I came up with some fun aspects for this guy though, like “This Definitely Won’t Work,” which takes an interesting angle when you consider his profession.
