Small World: Underground
I tried the new Small World today, and it’s still Small World. The new design has a lot of charm, if it is a bit stupid sometimes with the Monty Python and Lara Croft references. But the addition of items and special locations really change the dynamics, as there is a huge incentive to go after certain locations. I came in dead last, by not by much, because while I was sure I was losing, I also had a lot of little opportunities to get a few coins, which bolstered my score. The fact that both races I had cared about mushroom forests and there was a popular place that allowed one to teleport to any mushroom forest made my goal clear. If I hadn’t proven time and again in the past to be ruthlessly cunning, they might have ignored me and not blatantly attacked me for no reason, and I could have pulled it off, but alas.
I like this, though. It has a lot of unique interactions, and the new powers, while some are just copies of powers from the first game placed in different ways, there are some neat interactions. Some of the powers get really confusing, especially when you start with interactions with the relics. But it’s a nice next step for this series.
