What I Played Today: December 17

Mass Effect 3

You don't want to read about what happened in Mass Effect 3 today. I almost don't want to tell you.

So, still on the Quarian homeworld, have to save some guys from some fighter jets. We go to this server, I guess, and Shepard gets full-on Tronned. Legion (or whatever this thing is) uploads Shepard to the Geth hivemind and you go through and blast corrupted code and watch the Geth story and it's exactly what you think it is. Anyway, all of this leads to a group of Geth Prime joining you on your mission, and these guys do not seem bad! Just misunderstood robots!

Then you go the Reaper base and I suddenly hate Geth again. Goddamn rocket launchers. After a completely exhausting series of fights, you go to shut down the Reaper code or whatever and turns out it's an actual Reaper! I don't know how we didn't see this coming! But Shepard is having none of it and tells everyone to lock their lasers onto the thing and blow the crap out of it, which he is standing there, on the ground. Just...facing off with the thing. Shepard has balls.

So, choice time. Quarians want to blow up all the Geth while they are vulnerable (because they are huge dicks), and the Geth want real sentience which they can get by uploading some now-non-corrupted code. It's up to Shepard to choose whether this upload goes through. Now, I have seen the light, I know a true AI who is actually a nice person, and I've been inside the Geth mind. These guys just want their independence, and while I hate fighting them, that is no reason to deny them a chance at existence. So I let Legion upload the code, and tell Tali to get the Quarians to stop attacking.

The Quarians don't stop attacking. They refuse. The Geth, now smarter and more effective, fire back. They are far stronger. They manage, in fact, to kill EVERYONE. The Quarian race instantly goes extinct. Tali, grief-stricken and betrayed by her dearest friend, throws herself off a cliff. Shepard stands there, dumbstruck, as a Geth Prime, now a chill guy, walks up and says, "Hey thanks, sorry we couldn't save the Creator race, but what are you going to do?"

Holy fuck. I sat there dazed. I mean, this is the first time when Shepard's decision has had true, devastating consequences. Every other time, it's a case of, "Well, sucks, but it has to be done, we'll get by." This time, it is an either/or. No matter what you choose, it is genocide. Quarians or the Geth, Shepard. CHOOSE. And the worst part was it was not presented that way! It is clear what will happen if you side with the Quarians, but I could not possibly predict that choosing the Geth would led to the horrific destruction of the entire Quarian race. Why the fuck did they not just stop shooting? I had stated constantly, "This is a stupid idea, you guys need to knock it off, these Geth are being mind-controlled and we can get along with them." But...they didn't get it. And now they are all gone. Jesus.

So I immediately picked up the missing pieces of culture that I had been asked to get, booked it to the Citadel, and met Miranda and had some sadness sex. Because what else was I going to do? This decision point really fucking sucks.
