What I Played Today: January 13

Guild Wars 2

So much Guild Wars 2 today! I learned a few things today.

Learned 1: The trading market in this game is amazing. You don't just go and buy stuff you need, and maybe people will buy it, who knows, people can actually put in orders for specific objects, which you can sell to them immediately, from anywhere. And there are tons of orders on the marketplace! You can unload stuff so easily. Sure, you might not get a lot of money that way, but the fact that it is so easy to buy and sell is pretty incredible, especially combined with the absolutely nuts crafting system.

Learned 2: The crafting system is also pretty great. For one thing, it is super extensive. There is tons of things to craft and completely fill up your limited bag space with. But that's the cool thing; if you take a craft that creates armor, of the three, there wil be a bag-making option available to you. Not just cloth crafters get bags, the metal crafters can also make boxes. That's pretty cool. But the coolest part of the crafting thing is the recipe discover game, in which you learn new recipes by just jaming stuff together. If an item is part of a recipe that you don't know, you can add it, and it'll tell you how many recipes involving that item you don't know, and then can keep adding things until you either run out of items (meaning you're missing something) or you have found the recipe. Everything that won't work with the current item is grayed out, so you never feel like your futzing around.

Anyway, in a standard profession, there isn't a ton of surprises, since everything kind of fits a formula, and it's just a matter of tweaking the formula. But the chef profession? Oh my gosh this is so much fun. Because there is so many ingredients out there, and there are intermediate stages that are needed to make certain things, and what comes out is a bit of a mystery. I just love hunting out a new vegetable or whatever and throwing it in the blender, see what comes out. I especially love when it's a weird anacronistic thing, like, say, cheese pizza. I can make cheese pizza in a land that doesn't have running water! I probably spent a good hour just cooking today, and I have absolutely no space in my bags anymore, because it's full of food.

Learned 3: While using the wiki to figure out where I can buy special foodstuffs (some can't be gotten off the marketplace, like apples. It is impossible to buy an apple), they mentioned jumping puzzles. Now, I thought jumping puzzles were when you try to get to a weird vista point and look around. No! There are special sections that you need to navigate through jumping, and when you get to the end, there is a treasure box waiting for you! And there is no indication they even exist except in the achievements screen. So I cheated and found the location of one, which is hidden in a well in the center of town that you have jump from a specific place to get to. Then I stumbled my way through after many misjumps to get to a ledge with a bunch of veggies (yoink), and I mess up the last jump to the actual treasure chest. But man! What a crazy idea. Platforming puzzles in this MMO. I imagine it would pretty annoying to do as a Norn or Charr though, as those character models are HUGE.

So yeah, lot of fun playing Guild Wars 2 today.
