Fallout 4, Final Fantasy XIV, Terra Mystica, One Night Vampire, Hexcells
I am a professional slackbot. I would apologize, but at this point it would ring really hollow. I just get distracted and have other writing that I need to do every night, so this doesn't take a priority for me. I'm sorry. But let's talk about a few things I have played over the past couple of weeks that is worth talking about.
I purchased and have begun playing that game we are all talking about, Fallout 4. It is perfectly fine! I am not hooked by any means. There are a lot of weird little hooks that are kinda cool, but I hate getting randomly killed in the wilderness by radscorpions, or having to try a mission over five or times because I just don't have the levels, or even trying to possibly comprehend the very involved and very unclear settlement building system. I like wandering around and seeing what kind of nonsense is out there; picking up story threads and righting 200-year-old wrongs. I did manage to find and kill a Glowing One, and that was a fun achievement, but otherwise it's just...kind of a chore. Sometimes I find myself just stopping and being like, "Why am I doing this?" I do like Mac though. That guy was pretty cool. Yeah, okay, I'll buy a beer from you in the middle of this field, Mac.
I purchased the expansion for Final Fantasy XIV over Thanksgiving, and it has finally arrived! So I installed it and the only noticeable difference is that I can now gain experience points again. Okay...cool. But I'm a good 80% through the story missions before I start unlocking Heavensward stuff, so I just kind of having to keep grinding.
I played a full game of Terra Mystica with some friends, which is a very involved area-control board game that decided to make things more difficult with a lot of little game mechanic engines that...aren't good? I don't think they are very good. Oh the game is fine, but the amount of energy spent on POWER is kind of toxic in this game. One player managed to run away with the game because his race focused almost exclusively on changing terrain quickly and easily, and during one round, you could get some huge bonus points for changing terrain! This also allowed him to run away with the area control game, and while I drove hard on the cult track, it ended up not providing nearly enough points to catch up, so the game was a bit of a runaway. Otherwise, it's interesting, if unnecessarily involved. One that tries to set up several paths to victory but can be broken by a player who can mainline all the paths at once if not stopped. So...every Euro game in the past five years. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also played a quick game of One Night Vampire, and it's a bit of a mess! I'm sure repeated play will help, but I don't know how much longer One Night games have. I will need to start attending conventions if I really want to start tapping into my deception game needs, because my various groups are flagging on these games hard.
I've also been playing a bit of a Minesweeper clone called Hexcells! It involves hexes instead of squares, and the boards have a lot of variety and JUST enough information that you don't have to guess. That's pretty cool. Of course now I'm late enough into the second game that ? tiles are starting to pop up, which are just huge gross borders there just to screw with me. What good are you, ? tiles? Just tell me. TELL ME!
