What I Played Today: January 14

Pocket Mortys

I downloaded that game that people are talking about? Who are these people? How did I hear about this? Anyway, it's a very obvious play on Pokemon, only instead of collecting various Pokemon, you are collecting various versions of Morty, from the hit TV show Rick and Morty. I like that show well enough, and it's not...terrible. It's not very good, but it's not terrible.

The main issue is that it is not enough like Pokemon. Like, instead of a well-designed map in which you slowly are introduced to more concepts over time and find a progress series of more complicated Pokemon, while giving you a difficult but reasonable challenge in the form of the Gyms, Pocket Mortys instead introduces you to everything pretty much immediately, and is focused almost entirely on procedurally-generated dungeons, to collect various pointless tokens so that you can challenge the Elite Six, which offer the only chance to significantly progress. Every dungeon is created to be exactly as difficult as you can handle, which means that it's a bit of a cointoss if you get the badge for the dungeon, which is the only reason to go into the dungeon, and it's all kinda boring.

There's also a crafting element? That's SUPER pointless, because you can't really make things you can use? I don't know, it's free, so I can complain exactly this much.
