What I Played Today: March 16

Kill Doctor Lucky, Dungeon Lords

Game night tonight, and it was fairly busy. There’s been a recent influx of newcomers, which is great, because more people to play with and more variety. Tonight I played a short game of Kill Doctor Lucky, which is a fine game, good sense of humor, interesting game play, and one of my revered Cheapass Games classics. I’ve always like the work of James Ernest; he was the first designer I ever started following, and probably the single greatest source that got me interested in board gaming. It’s sad he hasn’t done any lately, which is a shame. So it was good to play something of his.

We also got through a full game of Dungeon Lords, which was nice. It played really well once everyone was clear on what was going on. The new player managed to kick our butts pretty soundly, which was interesting. It was good to see the push and pull, see the mild interactions and try to track everything. I also start to see that Vlaada really likes this odd mechanic in which you build things up and then the game starts to tear through your hard work like a freight train. You see it in Galaxy Trucker, Space Alert is pretty much just trying to survive the impossible assault from the get-go, and you see it here too. I’m kinda surprised this is the same guy that designed the brainburner that is Through the Ages. But it was a great time.
