What I Played Today: April 9

Mystery Express

I’ve finally played my white whale, the game I’ve been trying to play but just failing to for TWO WHOLE WEEKS! Mind you, all I really had to do was buy it and tell my friends, “Hey, we’re playing this,” so it’s not like I had to try really hard, it was just an odd coincidence for a couple of weeks there.

Anyway, Mystery Express is basically a harder version of Clue, with less pointless downtime and a lot of trying to screw your friends by showing them the information they already have. You have a hard of cards and take a number of actions per turn try and find out which card has been placed aside to represent the murder. The real sticker is that there are two copies of each card, which means you can’t assume any card you’ve seen is innocent. There’s a lot of strategy, and a lot of memorization needed. It’s pretty clever, although it turns out in a three-player game you’re going to be seeing the same cards a LOT. It’s probably a lot more interesting with five players, and I’d like to give it a try with more people. There’s a lot of downtime though, as everyone is overthinking their actions, so it takes a while to get through.
