What I Played Today: October 15-17

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light; Spirit of the Century

I’m going to combine the weekend because I only played about two games, as I was working hard on getting far enough in a game to put together a good review. (Which can be read here) That game is Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, which finally got interesting and legitimately difficult, rather than dull and frustratingly difficult. The party is official back together, and for some reason there was a time skip or time rewind or something and everyone in the world is acting strange. Naturally, this happens after half the game is over already. But whatever, I look forward to finishing it now.

Also got together for RPG night, and I made my voice heard that I don’t want to play Mage. So we played something else, Spirit of the Century, which I was put in charge of DMing. After spending the hour it takes to make characters (pick-up game my butt), and trying to explain the rules, we got started. The players went for more boisterous and comedic character, including the son of a Rockerfeller who was really entertaining to watch. He spent the opening act thinking that something was obviously afoot at a fancy dinner party and managed to befriend a monkey, who he assumed was actually a woman that had been transformed into an animal (he assumed that Dr. Moreau was the villain, despite being fictional). After the party gets crashed by a man with mystical powers in a mask and a herd of animals, the party gets sent to investigate some mines in Africa, which they do with explosions. After some screwing around, they find an ancient device and the man in the mask, who claims he isn’t evil and instead insists that it was their benefactor that was trying to kill him. So…after some handshaking, the party agrees to keep everything a secret, and go along their merry way.

It was a fun session because of the over-the-top performances, although one player had a character that was a little too powerful in retrospect. But I think everyone enjoyed themselves, and I’m glad I could come up with a full adventure from literally the seat of my pants. “Okay, you see a…um…hallway lined with fancy curtains. Yeah, that’s it.” But that also meant that I didn’t have any good conflicts planned, and I lost my pencil at one point, so any actual fights were truncated at best. We also didn't use the aspects as much...which is primarily an issue of not being sure how to use them exactly.
