What I Played Today: October 18

Shibuya

I don’t know if I’ve talked about Shibuya, the game that I saw at PAX and managed to snag for free while they were giving it away one weekend. It’s an odd puzzle mix…blank slates fall from the top of the screen, and you need to fill them with colors, which you get in a certain order as indicated on the side. You need to color the slates before they hit the ground, but you can only fit 12 or so slates before the screen fills, so you have to match like colors in order to get rid of them. You get bonuses for combos and huge blocks of color, and for clearing the board, which can be easy at certain speeds, but is devilish at higher speeds. It includes two modes, Quickplay, in which you only have two minutes to completely your objective, and Endless…which is…

Anyone, pretty clever, considering there wasn’t much to work with, but the most interesting part is the achievement system, which works in tiers. You need to complete the four achievements in your current rank in order to unlock the next set of achievements. This is neat, because it means that you are slowly learning the game and have something to work towards while you’re playing that isn’t vague or overwhelming, which helps me a lot when I play puzzle games. Otherwise my eyes just tend to glaze over and I get bored. I’m current at level 5, and man does it start getting tough.
