What I Played Today: November 16

Formula D

I played a large game of the popular racing game Formula D, or De depending on what edition. This was the newer edition, which includes probably the only reason I sat down and played it; the gearbox. Each player gets a little box with pegholes for their various mechanics, as well as a shift! This was real fun to look at and play with, and once you got rolling, the game is really simple. We played with some horrible amalgam of the rules, which combined elements of the advanced and basic game that made it real easy to explode. Four of the racers exploded (although one due to legitimately wanting to quit), and I managed to win when the second place car scrapped against me and was destroyed. But it’s a real visceral game, in terms of the luck involved and the fact that the game can be pretty tight throughout, with one good roll turning what looks like a beating into an even heat often.
