Portal 2
OH MAN, guess what I got ahold of today. Only a game that everyone had been anxious to play for months now, Portal 2. I attended a midnight showing, getting the last copy that the store had, and immediately jumped into the co-op campaign. In it, you play two friendly robots who have been sent to do various tasks for GLaDOS, running some tests and being generally berated. The puzzles are smart and fun, requiring a fair amount of cooperation, and I really enjoyed playing through these. Just the level of communication needed to play the game, and the great tools; it is a fantastic piece of work so far.
Probably my favorite level so far is the one where the ground is mostly covered by the gross water, with a few launchers littered on the floor. I hit the launchers to see what would happen, which puts me on a platform on the other side of the room. I see the only two spots to throw down a portal, and put them there. Then my partner finds a button, which launches a box in a smooth arc straight into the water, instead of into the portal like I expected. After some experimentation and some snippy comments by GLaDOS, I accidently find out that I can enter an infinite loop by hitting a certain launcher…that puts me in the same trajectory as the box at a certain point. After about three minutes of constantly being bounced around the little room, I finally get my hands on that box and we get out of the room. It was a surreal experience, probably exacerbated by the fact that I stayed up way too late.
Also played through the first chapter of the single-player, which was just plain good. It’s eerily familiar, as you visit a bunch of areas from the first game, but it seems like it will not be just hours upon hours of nostalgia, so that’s good. Well-written, funny, and definitely worth it.
