Devil Survivor Overclocked
Ah, new video games. They smell nice. Devil Survivor Overclocked is the latest from Atlus, a rerelease of the original with more stuff and some small adjustments to the main story, and my first purchase for the 3DS. The actual opening of the game looks absolutely insane in 3D, I thought I was going to have a stroke, but the actual game calms down once you get into it, and it's exactly like I remember.
I was presented with a choice, and I'm still not sure I made the right decision. The rerelease added a new difficulty level: easy. (This itself is pretty weird, because whenever they do a rerelease, they USUALLY add an option to make the game harder, because these are hardcore games.) Now, I didn't get very far in the story the first time, because I got frustrated with the usual SRPG shtick. I just don't like SRPGs very much, and only purchased this as a show of solidarity in hopes that they will really support the new system. I want to actually finish the story, so...I choose to start my new game on easy. I know! I'm sorry! I just want to see the multiple endings, okay?
It's such a weird thing, how playing a game on easy is like a badge of shame. As if the only way you're allowed to play video games is if you make it as frustrating as possible. I was watching someone play Deus Ex, and they commented that there were three difficulty options: Give me a Story, Give me a Challenge, and Give me Deus Ex. I love the implied machoism in that; yeah, okay, you're a real puss if you want a story instead of a challenge, but even these two jerks aren't stepping up to play the game as it's really intended to be played. But there is already so much talk about how people rarely finish games, and yet you aren't allowed to actually make it easy on yourself? Just so much wangness.
But I'm committed now, and I'll play it on easy if I want to. The game is dark enough as it is, I don't want my team in risk of dying every fight.
