What I Played Today: September 9

Elder Sign

New Fantasy Flight game, another rough around the edges experience. Elder Sign is a dice game set in the Arkhamverse (really, self? Arkhamverse?) in which you're trying to gain a bunch of elder signs before the big bad shows up and eat everyone. To do this you need to complete a lot of weird tasks in a museum, and you need to that by rolling dice. Each adventure requires a few tasks to be completed, by rolling exact rolls with 6-8 dice, and that's where the majority of the problem comes from, because having to roll something exactly is anathema in a dice game. I cannot even remember the number of checks we botched because we were waiting for one final symbol as our chances got worse and worse. Also, the resource that you need to collect in order to win often is gained hand in hand with an addition to the doom track, which is just anti-productive. Our loss mainly came at the hand of not expecting to fail when we did and having our character die, and when it got down to the end, with a prolonged and insufferable volley against the main boss, in which you have to roll three dice perfectly to even hit? Not very fun at all. I like some things, but the game needs a lot more wiggle room, but I hate hate hate when these Arkham games make you fight the old one, because it is never fun, and never interesting.
