What I Played Today: July 7

Final Fantasy XIV

OOPS I played Final Fantasy XIV for six hours! Just running around with my impossibly tall lady who seems to talk exclusively to a race of people who are at most two feet tall. It leads to some weird juxtopositions.

But I just kept bouncing around from place to place, seeing whatever everyone needed, punching the crap out of anyone who happened to be there, and I really like the quest system and all that. The markers for the quests are pretty good, plus there's alternative objectives to do in each zone. There aren't a lot of skills to use in a particular class, so the combat is a little dull for the first couple of levels, but otherwise, good enough fun.

The story is kind of all over the place though. You start by going to the Adventurer's guild, who directs you to this guy by a train track, and then you go look for this princess, and a monster and a pretty boy show up, and then you bounce around from hub to hub doing random tasks like clearing out monsters, until he tells you about this prospector who wants to change the government, and then you fight a golem, and then you hang out with these disgraced soldiers for a while, and find out this plot to steal a wagon train led by a corrupt soldier, but you only find that out because you were busy cleaning some docks... Anyway, eventually it winds up that you need to help some bigwig recover the imperial crown, because you are suddenly trusted to do that for some reason. It would have probably been easier to handle if I wasn't paying attention to the plot.

But I went from level 4 to 15 like that, taking a minor sidetrack to learn how to sew. The crafting system in this game is alright, although it appears that all crafting requires collecting these elemental shards? And I apparently already had 250 of them, but I have no idea how to get more. What happens when I need to make more pants?!
