Ghost Stories
I DID IT! I beat Ghost Stories...on the easiest difficulty...and got a total of 3 points...which is pretty pathetic. But I’ve proved that it could be done! Hurray!
Okay, a few notes so that everyone knows what I’m doing. I had the blue guy who could use 2 exorcisms or 2 villagers; the green guy who can reroll dice, the yellow dude who can weaken ghosts, and the red guy who can fly. My strategy with the blue was constantly getting the two buddhas, so that I could blast ghosts from space whenever I wanted. I tried to keep all the boards clear as best I could, and got really lucky on a couple of rolls. If something would do a lot of damage each turn, I would drop a bomb on it; weaken it and get someone who could roll twice to kill it. I made sure that I used the yin/yang only when I was sure to get it back right away, so that I had it at the end. That helped a lot.
The Big Boss was the Hope Killer. Oh god the Hope Killer. It requires 8 total icons in the exorcism, 2 of each type. Luckily, I was in the exact right place to handle this. I had each character use the tea house to get two tao tokens, and after a round of that, bunched all my guys (at least all of them still alive) at the tile in front of the Hope Killer, and in a single damn roll, got two white sides (wilds my brother!) and he was out for the count. Boy-ya! It was really tight, to be sure, but I had maybe another turn before I would have died, which was helpful. It sucks that I scored so low, and I couldn’t imagine playing a harder version of the game, but it just feels good to prove that it can be done!

What I Played Today: March 21
Final Fantasy XIII, Ghost Stories
I got to disc 2 of Final Fantasy XIII today. I found this very strange, on account of the fact that I’ve only been playing for about 8 hours. I’ve seen quite a few games that can squeeze quite a bit of gameplay into a disc, with a lot more cutscenes and prettier graphics, and I’m having a hard time trying to figure out exactly what I’ve been shown that’s been a disc’s worth of material. I can’t even remember what happened because I was so blown of being told to change discs. “Already?” I thought. I don’t even think I’ve seen the whole game yet! I don’t have access to all the mechanics!
I also have decided to start a personal vendetta against the game Ghost Stories. This game must be winnable, even on the most basic level, and I want to figure out how to do it. I’ve looked at some strategies online, and frankly it’s nothing that I couldn’t figure out myself. Yeah, place the smaller things on the corner, black monsters are terrible, I know, I know. I did pretty well, until about ten monsters from the boss, and then it all went downhill. I managed to get nearly all my taoists killed, so that was impressive, but yeah, once the first one went down, it was game over. I guess I’ll try again tomorrow.

What I Played Today: March 20
Descent: Road to Legend, Rock Band, Ghost Stories, Dominion
We started the advanced campaign of Descent today, and it went really well. I was given the magic character, a slow but powerful character, and got the skill that allowed me to use another player as my starting point, which means that I was never anywhere close to the front line. I took a total of 2 points of damage the entire game. It was great. The randomly generated dungeons in the game are fairly creative; each stage has a special thing to keep track of, and they are great little vignettes. We had an odd one with two named creatures, which really helped us get quite a few experience points, but the overlord caught up with a few quick kills on the last floor. It took a long time to get that far though, so we called it quits before we could go to the market to train our next skills.
Then I got to play some Rock Band, a few new songs. It was fun, but that’s really I got to say about it. Then I got an opportunity to play Ghost Stories. I use the word opportunity because the game continues to be the most difficult and frustrating coop games I’ve ever played. In it, you play a monk in a village that is constantly being besieged by ghosts from all sides. Each turn another ghost shows up, and you can either attempt to attack it by rolling a group of dice, or use one of the villagers to get a benefit. Each monk has a special power to move more effectively, get better attacks, etc. The game is brutal, with the monsters coming every single turn and we got behind really quickly and fell apart, including the death of two monks before the village was finally overrun.
To unwind from the slaughter, we played a couple of games of Dominion. I play this game so often that it’s hard to have a new comment...although I have found that I try to trash at least four or five cards a game if I have the option to. I just like slimming down the deck, being able to get what I want. I also bought a lot of provinces in the second game...every single one in fact. No idea what I did right, but it was a pretty impressive thrashing. I only lost a province from a saboteur.
