What I Played Today: August 13

Torchlight

I keep telling myself that I need to be playing Torchlight, because it’s supposed to be addictively good, which is like telling yourself you should get around to smoking. But every time I play I find myself getting a bit bored, and needing to stop playing after about 45 minutes or so. Sure, there’s a lot going on, and some of the set pieces and challenges that are handed out are quite good, such as a point where I’m running down a corridor and suddenly 20 spiders come tearing out of some grates at me. I was stunned and also excited.

But I just can’t stop feeling that it’s too derivative, and the fact that I’ve already decided what my strategy is going to be and all I’m doing is slowly marching my way towards it. I suppose there are a lot of other options, and I’m not utilizing even half of the resources the game has provided for me. I haven’t really figured out how those orcs work, and the enchanting guy I have no idea what to do with. Does he charge me, or what? Why would I ever talk to him? So maybe I need to branch out a bit, actually delve into the dungeon instead of doing the side dungeons, that kinda thing. Who knows. I did find a pretty cool rifle though.
