What I Played Today: August 31

Lone Wolf

Before I forget, my review of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (the game that was disclosed over the past couple of weeks) is now live at talkingaboutgames.com. Go look at it with your eyes.

I played with the Lone Wolf gamebook today, with one futile attempt in which I was expect to remember a whole bunch of random details (here’s a hint, no ‘orcs’ surrender to you, it’s a trick question), but I eventually got past that part and got to see all my friends and mentors killed. (Not a spoiler, it’s on the back of the damn book.) It’s a classic, obviously, but I kinda dislike the reliance on the combat system to force the majority of the non-traditional game overs. I mean, if you just want to get through the book, you’ll always say you won. Also, you have to search everywhere, even when it seems inappropriate, because the game demands a lot of items that you wouldn’t know existed if you didn’t look for them. But I have nearly escaped the monastery (then got bored) so let’s see what happens.
