What I Played Today: January 12

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood

No surprises today; playing more of that one game. I’m starting to feel a bit antsy when I’m playing, just a bit on edge because my slow, methodical play doesn’t protect me as well as I thought it would when I’m stalking. Being out in the open may be the only option to get to where my prey is, and it’s in those moments that I often get taken out, while I’m seconds away from a kill, and it’s a real douche chill level of frustration. There are also times when I can see my assailant coming, and I can’t do anything about it because if I run, they’ll pound X and kill me, and I don’t have the right skills up or recharged. So I haven’t been able to marathon the game, doing one or two games before I get frustrated and go watch TV or something.

Anyway, I had a couple of really fun games tonight, including a game of Manhunt that was just terribly unfair to our opponents. In Manhunt, the stalked get points for hiding in crowds, and the value is determined by how close your teammates are. So three guys in the same crowd will get 40 points a piece every 15 seconds, which adds up fast, especially when you pull the shenanigans we pulled. A killer came towards us, and with unholy precision, someone threw a smoke bomb, killer coughs, killer is stunned, killer recovers, smoke bomb, stun, recovery, smoke, stun. There was nearly a whole minute in which this poor guy tried to take us out, only to get flustered and have one of us come up behind him and knock him out. Eventually we dispersed, and he got so frustrated that he came running straight at me, killing me. But it was 100 points versus the 2000 we racked up in close calls, lures, and stuns. It completely sucked for them when we were hunting them too, as they died so consistently from our assault that there was rarely more than one in the game at a time. It was neat, and gave me an appreciation for a version of the game I didn’t really like.

I also played a game where I died 11 times, which I think should net me some points. I mean, come on. That’s just terrible luck right there.

I also finally realized that maybe, just maybe, I hadn’t downloaded the free DLC like I thought I did, so I tried to redownload it, and I was right, I didn’t have it. So I got to play a game in which I rocked on the new map, Mont Saint-Michel. This was the favorite place I visited when I was in France, and while the recreation is pretty unrecognizable, it’s still pretty cool. I guess when the game takes place, the chapel hadn’t been built to the massive levels that I’d seen while I was there, so there’s a large plaza in front of the chapel, and various streets and areas underneath it. It creates a weird dynamic, with a lot of the action happening a large open space with lot of hidden entrances underneath it. Because the plaza is so crowded with NPCs, I spent over three minutes in the early game just standing in a group and catching points from lures, occasionally stepping out and stabbing my target when he ran by. This strategy paid off for a lot of the match, as I always had two or three pursuers who would get stupid and stab a copy of me because there were just so many possible targets. The multiple levels also get screwy in advanced wanted, so it was a pretty fun new map.

I’m now waiting patiently for the second update coming this month, which will add another map of a town I’ve never heard of, but also a new mode involving treasure hunting, in which one team tried to steal as much loot as possible, while the other tries to stop them. I’m curious how they do it, but it’ll also be fun to have another goal besides kill or hide. Can’t wait.
