What I Played Today: February 23

Hacker Evolution: Untold, Clarence’s Big Chance

For some reason, I think games about hacking are neat. I like games that are about gathering information, and hacking games have a tactile feel, as if you were actually doing it (in a reality where operating systems are very convenient and nobody has any sense of security, but still). So I downloaded a demo for one to try it out, and I’m not sure I liked it well enough. You have to type in pretty much every command, which isn’t all that realistic and creates one hell of a stumbling block. There’s also not enough information on the screen, which you would think would be the first point. I have no idea what programs I have at my disposal, and I can’t “bookmark” useful information or instructions. In the first mission, they display a lot of the instructions in the main console, which is difficult to read. Also, a lot of the tutorial missions were you being explicitly told what to do. If all I’m doing is following instructions, how is that hacking? Couldn’t a 10-year-old do this? So, I guess I won’t be buying this one; they really need to make an open-world game of this type, where you are actively exploring and searching for information. Sounds hard, but might be fun.

Also played a platform game about a fat slob who will be going on his first date ever, so naturally he needs to jump around his house collecting money and goods. The overarching story of this game rubs me the wrong way, as it gets overly sardonic at points and really doesn’t need to, but it’s a huge game with lots of secrets and fairly well-designed levels. I’m just a bit miffed that I spend the whole time jumping around as a poor man’s Wario in his underwear. And of course I’m going to be mad when the “huge twist” at the end is that the girl he’s going to meet is also slovenly and ugly. Because fat people are funny, you see.
