What I Played Today: June 14

Katawa Shoujo

I went to bed early, because I'm a jerk, so the only thing I really played today was about a half-hour of a visual novel, which we classify as a game for some reason. I though I talked about this before, but anyway, this is an English language visual novel designed by a bunch of guys from FourChan, of all places, about a school for special needs students. The main character has a rare heart condition, and so he goes to school here and meets some wounded girls (a deaf girl, a girl with severe burns, a girl with no arms, etc) and, because it's what you do in visual novels, falls in love with one of them. I haven't gotten to any real decision points, just setting up the story and how tramatized the main character is. His condition is made all the worse because first presents itself the very moment where he confesses his heart to a girl and is accepted, so it completely wrecks his life when everything about him starts going wrong. It's written pretty well for an amateur project, without a lot of lunacy you'd expect from this crowd. I mean, when Castle Crashers couldn't keep Newgrounds' certain brand of nonsense out of its high-end release, it's weird that a quiet indie outing from the most insane website on the planet would be so thoughtful and toned in its project. But I guess people can act like professionals when they really care about the project.

That sure sounded pretentious and elitist. Oh well.
