Ideology, Alea Iacta Est
Game store, played a game of Ideology, which I wasn't a huge fan of. The game has this weird dynamic where what you can do every turn is enforced by some random card draws, and the resources and actions just seem very overhead and I'm not sure I like it. It also has this weird mechanic where in order to use certain actions on your opponents, you have to be at war with them. You also have the option of going to peace with them, but you are given no incentive to ever do that. All it does is severely limit your actions. I don't know, it's a weird game, and the winner won accidentally. Also hate the theme, because it gives bigots and racists a lot of wiggle room to be horrible at the game table.
Then a dice-rolling worker placement game called Alea Iacta Est. They really went out of their way to make this game difficult to remember. "Hey, can we play that game...with the virgins...there are dice?" Anyway, simple enough, roll dice, put dice in patterns on boards, collect resources. The game was actually pretty close, which makes me feel it was balanced enough, so...good on them.
