What I Played Today: November 3

Professor Layton and the Last Specter

I solved some puzzles.

What I Played Today: October 29

Rift, Professor Layton and the Last Specter, Batman: Arkham City

I played a bit of Rift today, because I hadn't all week (you're welcome), and it was just my usual faffing around. At one point someone wanted to go into a Chronicle, and I accompanied her, and it was supereasy. But it's really good experience, I wish I had a chance to go in there more often.

Started the new Professor Layton, which is about what you'd expect, except this time there is a cute spunky lady sidekick instead of Luke. Sure, you run into Luke eventually, but it's nice to have someone else there. Although where the heck she eventually goes (seeing as this is a prequel) is an interesting question. But nothing to report, really, just solving puzzles.

Although I mostly bought the new Layton for the second game, which is a cute little life sim in which you walk around and talk to people and have a job and it sounds really boring now that I'm saying it outloud. But I like life sims, and for some reason they make a huge point out of it being 100 hours long, so...let's see how long until I get bored.

Then more Batman. This time, I tracked down Hush, who also exists in this game, and who I only know from people telling me how dumb this character is. I like how completely stupid everyone is about the fact that he is trying to be Bruce Wayne, even down to the fingerprints. Oracle doesn't assume it's a trap, some random thug assumes that Hush is actually Bruce Wayne, despite the fact that his face is covered with Frankensteinesque scars, it's a little dumb. Also have saved the fourth Riddler hostage, and oh jeez it takes forever to get all these trophies. I'm starting to get the hang of what I have to do, I know my tools, but the fact that I need 80 more before the next one, oh jeez. I do like that they divide the achievements in such a way that you get credit for every fifth of the challenge rather than one chievo for the whole damn thing. So, I can give up anytime! I won't, but I can.

What I Played Today: February 28

Professor Layton and the Diabolic Box, Mass Effect, Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days

I got through Professor Layton a bit fast then I expected, still took a while, but I just plugged through it. Once you get near the end it’s pretty straightforward, just follow the path and bat away all those puzzles they throw at you. All the mysteries got solved in time, and there was my favorite part, where Professor Layton does something awesome that you can’t participate in at all, and then everything gets tied up in a bow. The big reveal wasn’t as ridiculous as the last game, but it was still pretty weird.

I’m almost convinced that Layton is gay, and that the gentlemen’s code that he follows is specifically designed to prevent him ever being near a women in a romantic manner. I know it’s a cheap joke, but this game doesn’t even try to create a single moment of attraction with him. There’s one point where a woman that’s actually close to his age is on the screen and he seems completely uninterested, instead trying to keep his young protégé away from her. It’s just...give us less fuel, guys.

I finally said screw it to the sidequests in Mass Effect, and managed to get a fair distance on the story tracking, getting through an entire chapter and shooting a great deal of geth. I had made it through 10 hours of gameplay before accidently finding out that I have a missile launcher on the vehicle that I’m forced to drive on all the planets. That would have been nice to know...pretty much anytime. I’m reminded of hearing that someone couldn’t figure out you could apply upgrades to weapons, despite that 60% of the loot you get is upgrades. But it was a lot more entertaining when I was following the story, even if it did feel exactly like an episode of Star Trek.

I started Kingdom Hearts 368/2 Days, which is probably the stupidest title for a game I’ve heard in a while. As far as I can tell, it follows the 368 days in which Roxas, Sora’s Nobody, is active as gets dragged into the Organization, and I really do not know who this game is for. I can guess; they wear a lot of black and listen to MCR, whoever the hell they are, but it definitely isn’t a game for me. So far every time the main character has opened his mouth, he’s had his chin buried in his forearm, for christ’s sake. This is an emo-ass game, and I’m really not sure why I rented it. An unusual adherence to a ridiculous franchise that’s gone terribly astray, maybe, despite the fact that I’ve no real reason to like it? I shrug lightly, and will continue to play because of forces that I cannot begin to understand.

What I Played Today: February 27

Dragon Age: Origins, Chibi Knight, Professor Layton and the Diabolic Box, Thunderstone, Pandemic

I started playing Dragon Age, mostly because I’m stuck on Mass Effect and I just couldn’t wait anymore. Apparently human rogues can only be nobles, which is weird, and the noble family has a really stupid name. These observations aside, I haven’t gotten very far, but I found some things mighty odd about the introduction. For one, whenever you get in a fight, you are suddenly, inexplicably covered in blood, even when fighting rats, RATS, whose splash radius has to be about six inches. How did the blood reach my shoulders, exactly? And, of course, nobody even blinks. “So, what was up in the larder? Have any trouble? I noticed you’re covered in blood, as you do. Would you like a sandwich?” More later when I get in the mood to play again.

I also played through a flash game called Chibi Knight. It was pretty standard, a bit of jumping and swinging, and a rudimentary leveling system. The only really interesting thing about it is its adherence to cuteness. Of course it’s chibi and silly, with a tiny little protagonist without legs, but all the voicework was done by the developer’s 5-year-old daughter. It almost sounds sickeningly sweet, but it’s turned out to just the right amount of cute. I wouldn’t recommend it, I just found its adherence to silliness endearing.

I finally got back to Professor Layton. It’s what it usually was, just wandering around and solving puzzles. I finally got to the big plot twist, when it turned out that something ridiculous happened, and we just went along with it and then walked outside and kept solving more damn puzzles. I keep getting stuck with the peg puzzles, and the game seems to think that they are the easiest thing in the world. They won’t give me any hints! But I’m still trucking, should get through this is a couple of days.

A few friends came down into the area, and we played a few games. We introduced them to Thunderstone, which everyone liked, except me. There was a lot of downtime during a 5-player game, and your plans often get spoiled by the time the turn get around to you again. The thunderstone also came up early, and a lot of heroes were tossed because of some jerk called the Archduke of Pain, so...it wasn’t the best game ever. But they seemed to like it. I still like Dominion a lot better.

(There was a great observation made by someone tonight about a completely different game, Munchkin. It was said by a great man that Munchkin can’t get out of its own way, that it tries to hard to match theme that it makes a crappy game, and I completely agree. That’s...all I got to say, but thumbs up.)

We also played Pandemic, and we lost again, even though we had everything completely under control. We ran out of time, which is completely arbitrary and is a bit of a problem when you are playing with 5 players. We just couldn’t get five cards of a color into someone’s hand, and we didn’t draw a scientist or a researcher. There’s a particular role that we draw EVERY TIME, the epidemiologist, which is not a great card, and yet we’re constantly stuck with her ugly mug, and we always lose. I almost want to toss the useless role out, because it never ever works.
