What I Played Today: December 21

Friday

In a fit of pique, I downloaded the Tabletop Simulator, because it actually seems like a decent program and I would really like a program with which I can easily simulate a few playtests I want to do. While the Tabletop Simulator is...imperfect in this regard, it also allows me to play a couple of games that have been foundering on my shelf that some people were kind enough to translate into Tabletop Simulator. Surely, if I already own the game, there's nothing wrong with simulating it on my computer. That's the rule, right?

Anyway, I played a game of Friday to get use to the various controls of the program, and it works pretty well, as long as you know what you are doing. I do, so that's nice. A lot of flipping of cards and etc, but it's just as good as finding the game, digging it out, and then playing the dining room for an hour like a weirdo, only to lose unceremoniously right before fighting the pirates. (That's what happened. I lost from a few bad draws and also ACCIDENTALLY shuffling the super-old cards with the regular-old cards. So...a little asterisk next to that loss.)

Friday

I played a game of Friday by myself. I didn't win. I kept on trying to cull my deck of all the garbage, but all that did is make it really easy for the aging cards to get in there. And those suck even worse than the garbage.

Friday

Tried to play a game of Friday, and at one point I picked up a couple cards and I just couldn't remember for the life of me which pile they came from, so I said, "Welp, this is a wash" and gave up.

I bought a solo card game! I special ordered a solo card game! It's almost a little sad. Anyway, it's kind of a deck builder, where you start with a crap deck filled with a lot of junk, and you can either pass challenges by having a high enough number and gaining cards, or tanking challenges to remove cards from your deck. Interesting dynamic. The game is dang hard the first time though, as you run out of life quickly, and each time you shuffle your deck, you add a crap card into it as well, so there's always a chance you will get burned by a "stupid" card.

I did manage to win the second game somehow. It gets a bit untenable when you really get into the boss fights, because you have so many abilities and need so many cards to kill them that it's hard to track. But it's a clever game, I kinda wish there were more variability, but mainly this is just me seeing deck building themes and expect dozens of choices.
