What I Played Today: February 19

At the Gates of Loyang

There was a group meetup tonight, and we were playing the latest of the Uwe Rosenburg games to prepare for a upcoming and undetermined tournament, At the Gates of Loyang. After about an hour of chatting, we sat down and I got to playing. I was in a game of four for the first time, which has some weird rules in this game. To speed the game up to a degree, the game suggests that you have two players go simultaneously, and they are only allowed to interact with each other during that time. It’s...a little silly, and I kinda ignored the rule because why the hell would you cut off interaction between players? And it’s also hard to make sure that nobody is making a mistake when you have two people going at once. When we have people playing for the first time it’s a bit obnoxious, but once everyone got in the groove, it worked out.

The game keeps opening up many facets each time I play. It keeps feeling like a different game every time I play, even though it keeps going the same things. The game puts a lot of constraints on what you can do each turn, and yet you still end up doing a lot on your turn and manipulating the economy aspect in hopes of making enough money to move up the Path of Prosperity. The four player game also allowed for the really useful helpers to keep coming up over and over again, so it was a pretty high-scoring game.

The environment was also very helpful, which I like. It was mostly me offering advice, but it made me feel good to play in an environment where we were all helping each other get the best score. I learned a lot of tricks just watching what everyone was doing, and it helped me understand the game better, and just how many options are available in this tense, very limited gameplay. I had a good time.
