What I Played Today: July 27

Settlers of America

Game night was consumed with playing the latest Catan release, Settlers of America, basically Catan with trains. I hadn’t played Catan in a long time, but the main mechanics came back to me...roll some dice, collect some resources, try to get the most points while occasionally getting screwed by the robber. The difference here is a much larger board based on the United States, with resources predestined based on the landscape, and most of the numbers and available city locations set as well, so proper city placement and road building is more important than luck. There is also a need to make railroads and move your trains to cities to drop off supplies. If you drop off all your supplies after expanding across the country, you win the game.

We did make a small mistake when playing...we had way too many victory cubes that we thought we needed to ship. While waiting for someone’s turn, I picked up the rules and took a look, and found the mistake, which helped because the game was going on too long as it was. There was a little bit of overanalysis, so we didn’t get wrapped up until the very end, where there was a bit of a rush to end it.

I did like that the game had one of the cities from my home state on the board, Idaho Falls. I know it was all about strategic placement, but I was still glad to see it. I even went out of my way to rush my settlers there to claim it, because it was near some sweet mountain tiles and frankly, I wanted to.
