What I Played Today: September 11

Recettear, Dawn of Discovery, Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdom

Played some new games today! I heard about this independent game in which you play an item shop owner in an RPG world, and I played the demo to try it out. It’s pretty interesting, and once I find out that I did not win it from a raffle I entered, I’ll probably buy it. It is a bit slow, with the tutorials really hammering the advice to buy low, sell high, but they did a good job with the translation, adding some American humor, and it looks good and deep. Although the amount of money I need to collect the first week is pretty harsh; I only made half the amount I needed on the first try.

I also received Dawn of Discovery free of charge, so I thought I’d try it. It seems to be a Civ game, but it is really slow starting, with some crazy bastard talking about how he needs your help to build a church in order to save the Emperor from a cold. So, you do some stuff, and you have a boat, and the controls aren’t exactly the most intuitive. But it seems to have good production value, as is typical with Ubisoft, and the story is picking up with some asshole trying to start a crusade and demanding my help, and I’ll keep giving it a try, I suppose.

I also spent way too much time obsessing over the Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdom browser game. I had finally cleared out all the areas around my homebase, and was all prepared to keep crusading in the regions around my town, until I realized that I wasn’t allowed to. That’s all kinds of dumb, I think I should be able to do something with all that space, since other players can’ t use it and my ability to gain experience is now greatly hampered because I don’t have large armies of NPCs to take out anymore. Hopefully what I’m supposed to do next becomes obvious here soon.
