What I Played Today: September 24

Civilization 5

I made a rather reckless move today. I had been eyeing a new computer for a month now, and today I finally made the plunge and bought one from Best Buy, a pre-fab that seemed pretty competent considering the price. I picked it up, put it together, and immediately installed Civilization 5, which is about 40% of why I wanted to get a new PC.

So, I like it! The game is very familiar, but there are some significant changes. For example, only one combat unit and one non-combat unit can stand in a hex at a time. This means that you just can’t pile up a huge crusher army and roll across the countryside, you have to worry about space limitations, where you’re going to keep your guys. Too big of an army and it can’t maneuver at all. Also, the city states that dot the country side give you a potential ally that won’t eventually turn on you for no reason. I also like the social values system…provides some small technology upgrades while uniquely handling the one you govern…so you actually feel like a unique society instead of just some random jerks who happened to be democratic because it was useful.

But I didn’t get very far, just played some tutorials (which were pretty pointless), but I’m already happy about my decision. Now I just need to reinstall every program I own……
