Dominion: Prosperity
Somehow, I woke up in Half Moon Bay, but I had brought my Dominion set, apparently, so there was some playing of that, using two of the suggested lists.
First game involved cards that left open a couple of interesting strategies, as well as the two more vicious attack cards in the set, Goons and Rabble. I hadn’t realized how terrible the Goons are; they have a special ability that allow you to pull a victory chip for each card you buy…but it comes with a +1 buy. The fact they also hit your opponents for two cards...just a vicious card, but at least it’s expensive enough to not get hit with turn 3. We assumed that the one collecting the most chips would win, but it turned out he was padding his deck with Estates, which was slowing down his money engine and he couldn’t any of the high cost victory cards very well.
The second game was about big actions, with the King’s Court (super Throne room, three actions repeated) and some other interesting treasures in play. My plan was to use Loan to get crap treasure out of my deck, and Mint to boost all the good treasure I had. Unfortunately, it went array when I was getting hit with about a Rabble a turn. The rabble takes the top three cards of your deck, gets rid of anything useful, and then puts the green back. Killer when you’re trying to run with a light stack of cards, so I lost that one too.
I like the set a lot though…the high cost cards make your actions feel a lot grander, and while there’s a certain something about the Colony (one player thought that they broke the game by providing too much VP), I think it works pretty well. The game is noticeably longer though…as you have players trying to ramp up to 11 coin in hand instead of 8. Provinces just don’t look as tasty with that Colony sitting there.
