What I Played Today: March 12

Persona 4, Rift

I’m still being driven to play a lot of Persona 4, moving on to the part of the story where we have to track down an actual killer. I really like this part of the game, because it throws a real wrench into the formula they’ve established thus far. While in Persona 3 you’d still be dicking around with the same general motives, this one makes you doubt everything that happened before and gets you to believe the game might actually be over soon (the first of THREE TIMES this happens). But I’m still rolling; I’ve already maxed out three social links and am level 8 in at least four others, so I think I’m quite a roll.

I also found myself overcome by the aggressive advertising campaign to try Rift, because why not? The reviews have been moderately positive, and the interesting tactic towards player classes, in which there are 32 (32!) different classes, split across four different callings, and you get to have up to three of them at a time. It’s all talent tree nonsense, but their approach to it is interesting, and I kinda like that the starting area for the faction I choose (yes, fucking factions too) seems to be after the Apocalypse, and you’ve been tasked with going back in time and preventing the horror around you from happening (This tactic is known as a reverse Guild Wars). It’s competent, and I like the sense of replayability to it, so I’ll keep trying it until I get bored.
