What I Played This Year 3: Top 10 Most Played Games

10. Sentinels of the Multiverse

Once again this year, I did not overplay a lot of board games, but somehow, this game seemed to hit the table a lot, and it think it has something to do with all the expansions that it has been boasting lately. The game looks so much better now than it did when I first saw it, and the pure variety that the expansion packs have added really helps. I am looking forward to the next expansion and all the new goodies that these guys keep putting out.

9. Persona 4 Arena

This is a weird one, since I don't really like fighting games, and the only reason I played this one as much as I did was because it was more story set in the Persona universe. But you know, I really like that place, so that makes sense. But it is a weird one, and one I couldn't possibly recommend to anyone, because you would have to be a certain kind of crazy to like this.

8. Harvest Moon

I will probably always have a Harvest Moon phase. This year I dug deep into the latest one for the 3DS, made it all the way to winter before I burnt out, but I might go back (I probably won't). But I like the micromanaging aspect, and I like the social aspect, and I wait patiently for the next one so I can play that one heavy for about a month too.

7. Rock Band Blitz

A noticeable hole last year was rhythm games, which I couldn't play a lot just because situations were changing and my social group just wasn't into it anymore. So the release of Rock Band Blitz was a bit of a blessing, getting a chance to really play through those songs again. I bought way too many songs for it, which I haven't even gotten around to playing. Should probably chill out and try playing this again, start fighting my friends again.

6. Rift

I really don't know why I restarted my Rift account for a few months there. Old habits, I guess. It won't happen again. Let's stop talking about Rift.

5. The Resistance/Avalon

I really like traitor games, and this year, I managed to find a group that really likes it too. Well, liked. The Resistance was a staple of the game group here in Minnesota when I first started hanging with them, and Avalon (basically Resistance but different) created this huge rift, in which half the people really liked the additional roles (like me), and the others hated it and never want to play again. But I will still continue to suggest it, because it's easy to play, it's fun, and damn it, I like it.

4. Magic: The Gathering

This one surprised me when I was compiling my list, but apparently I played a lot of Magic: The Gathering this past year. Or at least a lot of the Magic: The Gathering video game, and I can see that being true. While I can't keep up with the metagame and gave away all my Magic cards, meaning I might never own a deck again, but I still always scope out the latest set. It's an intriguing game, and if they keep making it easy to play, I'll keep playing it.

3. Kingdoms of Amalur

Ah, this one is sad, as the company that put this together managed to self-implode six months afterwards, but I ended up like this one a good deal, obviously, I seemed to have played it a good deal. Still haven't passed it though, because the game is just long...so long. And there was a ton of content too! I far as an action RPG goes, they did a pretty good job with this one.

2. Assassin's Creed series

Hey look, Assassin's Creed again. I just can't stay away, the multiplayer is still pretty good. I have come to dislike the main storyline, and how it managed to squander so much potential, but you know? I'm probably still going to buy the next one. Assassin's Creed: Do Over. Just keep making games where I stab dudes, and I will continue to buy them.

1. Guild Wars/Guild Wars 2

Yes, this makes sense. I really like Guild Wars 2, and so it would make sense that, in anticipation, I would also play a lot of the original. I include them together just because one begat the other, otherwise Guild Wars would have gotten its own spot on this list as well. The games just hits a lot of good notes for me; its customizability, its depth, and its interative gameplay. Now if only I ever wanted to run dungeons. Screw dungeons.

So...looking back, it appears that I am making some changes, expanding my horizons more, while still hanging on to stuff I like. I should really start looking back at some stuff that I blinked at early on, to see if my preferences have adjusted enough to really get them now. I know I've been avoiding playing XCOM because it sounds painful, and then I remember that I really like Dungeons of Dredmor, so what's my problem exactly?

And really, I cannot imagine not doing this blog anymore. I've kept at it this long, right? I just need to figure out a way to make it more readable, because I'm still very low on readers for something this old. After a certain point, it just crazy shouting. So attempts at change are probably coming, thanks for reading, and here's to Year 4.

  1. I will set up a new Facebook account to do more Score Wars if you start playing Blitz again!

  2. More review like posts, posts that don't require having played the game to understand the post, and probably the only real thing you need is just to give the url to more people.
