What I Played Today: December 23

Don't Starve, D-Day Dice

Man, tried to play D-Day Dice again, after buying a couple of expansions. They really played up this "A Few Good Men" rule on the packaging, when really, all it boils down to is the resource you need to keep playing is harder to get. Thanks, D-Day Dice. I wasn't having enough fun losing constantly as it was.

Also more Don't Starve. I am getting into a good rhythm, finding myself parking my base in the same place every game. I broke and checked a wiki to see where all the stuff I needed was, and I'm okay with that, because how else was I going to figure out where to get poop? How hard could it be to find poop?

D-Day Dice

I opened up the old D-Day Dice box and remembered that I forgot how to play so I put it away again.

What I Played Today: August 3

We Didn't Playtest This At All, D-Day Dice, Grimoire Shuffle, Kingsburg, The Resistance

Game night was super packed with Magic players tonight. We had to convince someone to set out a table for us. To start, a couple of dumb games of We Didn't Playtest This At All, which has an unnecessarily long name for such a dumb game. Then after a group went off to play Core Worlds, I showed off the games I brought, D-Day Dice, which was...okay, and Grimoire Shuffle, a game currently in playtest that I made a print-and-play of. It's a neat racing game where people work in teams to get through a maze. The team leader chooses a "book" of moving options for their partner, while the other team chooses a book for the leader. It's an interesting dynamic, and it was a hit at the table.

I played Kingsburg, which I hadn't before, because there were dice involved and I hate dice. But it's actually pretty fun, especially since I invested in the buildings that let me change the dice as much as possible. I ended up able to roll an extra dice for the rest of the game, which helped me win because I could take the queen space often. It was almost unfair.

Also a couple of games of The Resistance, one that I lost as the spy because everything just went the wrong way, and the second game I flubbed by putting in the wrong card in the mission, and we had to just stop the game and everyone went home. I felt like a jerk for breaking it, but everyone assured me they weren't mad. I hope.

D-Day Dice

I played a lot of games of D-Day Dice as I was just chilling at home today. It took me a couple of failed games to figure out that soldiers are really really really important. You need men. Doesn't matter if you got a flamethrower, if you've got no one to hold it, it doesn't matter. But once I realized that I really need a solid early soldier roll, it started coming together, and I beat the next two maps, and now I'm stuck on the fourth, which is obnoxiously hard for the solo player, because it has two objective locations, and you need to visit both of them. Of couse, I can't get off the beach on that map, but still.

Sentinels of the Multiverse, Descent, Race for the Galaxy, D-Day Dice

The Source! It is a fun place for games. I got there early, because I always do, and some people who don't seem to have friends but play in a public place anyway (?) were setting up Sentinels of the Multiverse for two players. I told them it was impossible, so I joined them and easily killed Baron Blade. That guy is a pushover. One thing I missed the first time I fought him is when he turns, you pull out all of his mobile defense platforms, but you throw them in the trash instead of into play, which makes them useless. I don't get the point of this. But the game went well.

Then some people I knew showed up and I thought I would get to play Descent (second edition) with them. But I guess not, because the table was full. But since I had also bought the game, I set it up and played with four other people. I had a lot of misgivings about the game, about all the changes made and how little seems to be included with the game. But after playing, I think it works. The first mission is not the grandest, but the way the game works in general, it feels fun, and that's the important part. Now I just need to check out the other quests.

There was some screwing around, I don't remember if I played anything, but I did play a game of Race for the Galaxy, which I lost, like usual. I like this game, I just don't like how hard it thinks it needs to be. The iconography is so hard to describe to other people that it makes it difficult to get onto the table. But it's fast and easy and interesting. Everyone go play this dumb game.

Then I cracked my copy of D-Day Dice, which I bought that day because it was available and I have no impulse control. I was super dubious about this game as a multiplayer game, since it started as a pretty focused solo game and adding more people could only make it worse, and I was wrong! The game is actually really fun with multiple people, as you work together to keep each other alive, plan your route, determine who gets what items, it's a cool team feel. One thing we didn't do right is the trading rules, as I misread one of the specialists, so we ended up trading stuff we couldn't, but other than that...pretty fun! The tutorials were kinda dumb as heck though, as they eased us into the game a little too much. I shouldn't have to wait for the third game to get the benefits I really need, game. But enjoyable.
