DJ Hero
Played some DJ Hero today, spinning some mad beats. I finally got to a DJ who doesn’t look like a complete idiot, and the beats remain fresh. I do question the decision to force the player to play three to five mixes in a row, mainly because I find myself getting frustrated when I get done with a tough song and think, “Man, that was tough, I could use a break,” only for the next song to pop up. Also, the rewind ability may be viscerally neat, but it sure isn’t very helpful in game. It only goes back about five seconds, in which time you can score double points for maybe three notes. Whoopie.

What I Played Today: August 27
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Plants vs. Zombies, DJ Hero, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
I finished two games today! That’s quite an achievement, if I say so. Sure, I was on the last level on both games, and was just a matter of finishing things up, but hey, they are done. In the can. Boosh.
I first completed Plants vs. Zombies. Finally figured out that the big damn zombies are just, you know, big, and a cherry bomb will take out half their life, so that they were actually defeatable before they squashed all my stuff. Also, screw that little zombie. But the true test was the Zomboss, who has a giant robot. I had to look up a hint so that I didn’t lose all my dude, but after about five tries, he was dead, and I got to “enjoy” their cute little ending song. Ug, cute songs. So, now I need to grind levels until I can afford the ridiculous prices for the cool stuff. Luckily, pretty easy on the early levels, which I finally have access to.
Also beat Lara Croft: the Guardian of Light, which I had been reviewing (review should be up early next week), after finally slogging through the second to last level and killing the huge damn demons that hold the keys to the door, and then I had to fight Xolotl, who has a stupid complicated name. It was only tough because of the first level, in which the entire floor is covered with spiketraps, which would occasionally catch me. But the game made it easy by handing me the ultimate weapon halfway through the boss level, so...thanks.
Also played DJ Hero some more, which is neat. I want a new DJ though...all the beginner DJs look like complete idiots. But man, I wish I had an interest in the scenester scene, because the mixups are really fun. Speaking of scenester stuff (I forget, are scenesters douchebags? I think they’re cool), I downloaded Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and played as Kim Pine for a while. Best part about Kim Pine? Her Knives attack is a reference to the coolest part of Volume 4. It’s pretty awesome. But the game is good. The only problem is that a lot of the action happens at the edge of the screen, where I can’t see anything. That’s not where action should happen. Just saying.

Dominion, DJ Hero, Plants vs. Zombies
I’ve been playing Plants vs. Zombies again, trying to get to the end so that I can play actually play the bonus stages, damn it. I don’t understand why I can’t go and play the stages I’ve past already. Anyway, I’m on the roof, which I understand is the last stage, but man is it a doozy. The majority of your plants are useless unless they are extremely exposed, and all placement needs to be superseded with planting a pot as well, so it’s just a more expensive game. Luckily, I have double sunflowers, so that handles the cost, but I’m having a hard time refreshing anything fast enough if I’m in trouble. I also really, really don’t know what to do with the superzombie and his little goddamn Renfeld. He’s slow, sure, but not slow enough for me to even make a dent in him when he shows up. Bah.
Another game of Dominion, this one went a lot better, mainly because of the baron (Baron’s a pimp) and buying way too many victory cards. That seemed to be the way to go, although I had a hard time finishing the game, because my deck was so clogged. Plus, possession, so that’s nice.
I also got DJ Hero for $20 ($20!), and I like it a lot so far. The rhythm element is a bit simple, with only three buttons, but the need to scratch and adjust a slider varies it, and the mixes are really nice to listen to, especially when you see the correlation to what you’re asked to do and what happens. It’s well worth the price I paid for it.
