What I Played Today: May 27

Odin Sphere, 30 Second Hero

I got a little further in Odin Sphere, after screwing up again with the damn tutorials (I did figure out how to drop a damn item), and kicked the crap out of some lady who happens to be my sister, and then went to a mountain? A weird thing is that I spent a lot of resources in the final boss fight, and felt that I was screwed, only to find that I can just go back to the zone I was in before and pick up all those resources again. So...I guess if I have troubles, I’ll just go back in time and level up. Just like all RPGs.

I also got through the Hero 30 campaign of 30 Second Hero, which was an experience. I kept having trouble with the final level because there’s a huge gap between villages, a lot of places that I wanted to go, and some difficult minibosses throughout, but the fact that the last and worst level of the game took at most five minutes shows how tight this game is. It’s a clever game, not a lot of depth, but it doesn’t have to have a lot of depth. It changes the game up enough every few levels, requiring you to change your strategies, whether you rush or stay cool, whether you “farm” to get the equipment you need.

I also found out that there are alternate paths! Meaning if I do one thing during a level, I’ll get one level, and if I do another, I’ll get another. Obviously, I knew this, but it threw me through a bit of a loop, since I never found them when I backtracked. But there are like three other campaigns, so I might get around to tackling them.

Odin Sphere, 30 Second Hero

Played some 30 Second Hero on the train, more of the same, still fun.

I also got past the place where I got stuck, had to use a whole bunch of equipment I didn’t want to use, but at least I got to advance, right? Yeah, totally worth it. I also fought a manticore! A pretty manticore. Okay, I guess I don’t have much to report.

World of Warcraft: The Board Game, Odin Sphere

I tried the WoW board game again, and while I like the combat system a lot, and the way that you slowly build a character, I obviously don’t know how to play this game. I keep getting killed by the simplest creatures. Maybe I’m just not getting the characters I need, or the equipment that’ll really help, but there’s just something that’s going wrong every time I play.

I tried one time with a warlock and a shaman on the Horde side, and while I had a good chance, it soon snowballed on me, and I can't remember much else besides I got kicked around a lot. The second time, I tried an Alliance side game with a mage and a priest, and this was miserable, as I could only get up to level 3 before turn 30 occured, and couldn’t even find the big bad. There just wasn’t enough time. I’m looking into various variants to at least make the game enjoyable while I learn how to play. To be fair, I really want to “win” this game, so I’ll probably be playing it a lot, just because it’s a good, crunchy fun game.

I also played some more Odin Sphere, and it is very pretty and kinda fun, a typical action RPG. I did run into a bug where I had a full bag and was expected to pick up a few things, and because I couldn’t, I couldn’t advance. It was kinda stupid and killed my will to keep playing, hopefully I didn’t screw myself by saving at that point. The boss fight against the dragon was awesome though. Go dragon fights.

Odin Sphere

I played a little bit of Odin Sphere, which I had rented again after I had found out that it was not only pretty (so very pretty) but also apparently really good and difficult. So I started playing through it again and have yet to get to the part where it’s super awesome. I’m basically running around hitting dudes with a stick, then sucking up their souls like God of War. Occasionally I plant a seed, and it blooms into berries, which I eat. Nothing else to mention, really.
