Odin Sphere, 30 Second Hero
I got a little further in Odin Sphere, after screwing up again with the damn tutorials (I did figure out how to drop a damn item), and kicked the crap out of some lady who happens to be my sister, and then went to a mountain? A weird thing is that I spent a lot of resources in the final boss fight, and felt that I was screwed, only to find that I can just go back to the zone I was in before and pick up all those resources again. So...I guess if I have troubles, I’ll just go back in time and level up. Just like all RPGs.
I also got through the Hero 30 campaign of 30 Second Hero, which was an experience. I kept having trouble with the final level because there’s a huge gap between villages, a lot of places that I wanted to go, and some difficult minibosses throughout, but the fact that the last and worst level of the game took at most five minutes shows how tight this game is. It’s a clever game, not a lot of depth, but it doesn’t have to have a lot of depth. It changes the game up enough every few levels, requiring you to change your strategies, whether you rush or stay cool, whether you “farm” to get the equipment you need.
I also found out that there are alternate paths! Meaning if I do one thing during a level, I’ll get one level, and if I do another, I’ll get another. Obviously, I knew this, but it threw me through a bit of a loop, since I never found them when I backtracked. But there are like three other campaigns, so I might get around to tackling them.

Odin Sphere, 30 Second Hero
Played some 30 Second Hero on the train, more of the same, still fun.
I also got past the place where I got stuck, had to use a whole bunch of equipment I didn’t want to use, but at least I got to advance, right? Yeah, totally worth it. I also fought a manticore! A pretty manticore. Okay, I guess I don’t have much to report.

Battlestar Galactica, 30 Second Hero
Tonight I got to play Battlestar Galactica with the guys, and although I had fun, a mess of a few considerations that went astray led to a bit of an uneasy feeling at the end. We started later than we should have and didn’t make sure that everyone had enough time to play, and we were having trouble keeping everyone engaged, so that the last half-hour was tense and we just tried to rush to the end of the game.
It was an interesting game though, with a Cylon leader who immediately joined the human fleet, while I was handed a cylon card from the beginning. I tried to engage in a long con, trying to convince everyone that those who were playing a bit poorly were doing so on purpose; the admiral who was inching us along a jump at a time, the president who kept wanting to repair locations when a whole cylon fleet was bearing down on us. The mistake I made was giving them a way to prove themselves with crisis cards, making it clear exactly what side they were on, or at least making it known. So, after accidently clearing the other people on the table, I couldn’t get aggressive without immediately painting a target on my face. By the time we distributed some new loyalty cards, the dials weren’t down far enough, and we suddenly hit the accelerator to end by midnight, and I couldn’t deal enough damage before the game was over. The Cylon leader didn’t win either, mainly because he was too friendly and needed those dials down as well with the humans winning (that card is pretty difficult).
I also played some 30 Second Hero on the train, and I’m starting to realize how clever the game is. Each level is short, able to finish in under five minutes, but each has a new trick; a new weapon to try to get, different considerations to handle, trying to understand what needs to be and how fast. There are a lot of secrets and a lot of ways to approach it, something you don’t expect from something so short.

30 Second Hero, Saboteur
It was a busy day today, so I didn’t have time for much besides screwing around some more with the PSP, playing 30 Second Hero. It’s an interesting idea, even if the actual RPG part of the game tends to extend beyond 30 seconds, as you’re often required to rewind time in order to have a chance of leveling up enough to defeat the evil overlord. Still, it plays fast and always has an interesting twist each level, even if some of them suck hard, like a goddamn maze level. Hopefully it can hold my interesting for 40 more levels.
I also finally got Saboteur through GameFly, the very game that I restarted my GameFly account for, only to be instantly disenchanted when I found it to be a different looking GTA clone, and having died on the introductory level. I’ve got nothing to say about it except that I’ve currently found myself unable to get back into it. Meh.

30 Second Hero, Persona, Legends of Zork
I purchased a new game system today! The PSP, the poor stepchild of the handheld world (well, except for the N-Gage, who the hell had one of those.) Not for a particularly good reason, but because I knew that I would need one eventually, when the updated release of Persona 3 hits the PSP in the States, and I’m already digging my purchase. I don’t know why I didn’t consider it before I heard of P3P, because it’s a beautiful, elegant machine, much nicer than the DS in turns of performance and usability. I guess it just got drowned out by the mass appeal, and the games suffer for it.
But it is also the better system for RPGs, in my opinion, after a couple of hours of trying it out. The controls mirror a handheld controller better than a DS does, and it’ll be easier to use in public for sure, without having to get out a stylus or be willing to blow into my machine like a moron. Not to mention that I can download Final Fantasy VII off the network. Exciting.
Anyway, I picked up a few titles so that I have something to do while I wait until July. One is Persona, the first game in the series that I love so damn much. I got through about 15 minutes of that to get a general feel, only to get a bit bored. The movies are fantastic, very surreal and crisp, but the actual gameplay looks like it came from, well, 1996. I’ll play more in the future, I’m sure, my attention span for the new shiny just couldn’t muscle through the thick RPG plotting.
Something that could hold my attention was 30 Second Hero, mainly because the game lasts less than a minute. It’s a quick RPG in which you have a really fast timer in order to complete the objectives, moving quickly across the field to get to the dark lord crypt and kill him before time runs out. It’s a clever concept, although I imagine I’m going to get really bored of the credits here soon, as they roll them after the end of each adventure. It also has a tendency to zoom in on the sprite-inspired graphics, which looks kinda stupid.
The guys who sold me the system also handed me a card for a free browser game, Legends of Zork. I figured, why the hell not, it’s not like there are a couple other browser games that are eating up my time. So I sign up, and enter the special code they give me, and then start playing only to realize that I’ve played this game before! I don’t remember what it was, but the playstyle was identical to a piece of shit browser game I played a while ago. Every encounter you roll a percentile dice to try and get above a number, and you have to keep upgrading equipment in order to be effective. There’s no skill involved, no reasonable strategy, no choice. Just hoping you get the best rolls, and pay the people money whenever you want to do better. Ick. But, a chance to get a bunch of free games, so I’ll play for a bit.
