What I Played Today: June 8

New Super Mario Bros Wii, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

More of the old Mario, and it’s about as compelling as I found it before (read, not very). I really wish I had more to say about this. Um...the second level is a desert level, just like Super Mario Bros 3, so I guess that’s...something. Moving on.

I also got Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne in the mail, and I started up, only to find that it’s every bit as good as the Persona games. And it was made about six years ago, which means this is the point when they figured out how to make these games. The game starts with the end of the world, and you getting possessed by a demon. You’re not, however, the most liked demon, and so you’re being constantly jumped by rival demons. You have also met a small group of humans that apparently still survived and need to track down, but to help you get there, you contract help from various demons...who also happen to look like the persona from the Persona series. Part of the Shin Megami Tensei business model is constantly reusing the same graphics for enemies and such so they can concentrate on awesome story and mechanics.

But it plays really well, and the inherent mystery of surviving the end of the world makes things very interesting, and it’s good to see old friends again. It’s fun so far, and I wish GameFly would let me buy this from them, because I would like to keep it.
