Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Well, guess who managed to get caught up with the insane plot of the Assassin's Creed franchise just in time for the new release. That's right, me! And let me tell you, it continues to make not all that much sense. But at least I got to watch all my favorite characters get old and die!

So anyway, when we last left Ezio, he had to go kill an army somewhere. So he does this by setting an entire harbor on fire. That's just how Ezio rolls, dog. After some really gripping visual effects, Ezio arrives at an underground city where the Templars are building up his army. He immediately sniffs out the mole and finds out the resistance has pretty much all been captured, then takes on the bad guy's Dragon to make sure no more prisoners get killed. This guy surprised me, because after the post-assassination white screen of death, this jerk got back up! Just like, "NOPE! Screw that," and I had to fight him one more time. I don't know if they'd ever done that before, but it was shocking nonetheless.

Then Ezio decides to set the whole city on fire, because he's a compassionate assassin, and kills the guy with the last key, only to find...

(Mildly spoilerish stuff after the jump)

Dungeons of Dredmor, Assassin's Creed: Revelations

I somehow managed to buy the DLC for Dungeons of Dredmor. Was just kinda looking around and realized it existed and only cost $6, so of course I'm going to impulse buy that. Who cares if I hadn't even beat the original game yet. So I jump in again, load up a character with some of the newer skill trees, and they are sufficiently wacky. My player is a communist vegan, who cannot kill animals and occasionally can take advantage of socialized health care, with the disadvantage of occasionally recieving a Communist-themed curse as well. It is silly. There is also an Atlas Shrugged joke in there, which is something I have never seen before, that's interesting.

I had also not turned on permadeath, and I am perfectly fine to just keep playing the same character even though she has died before. Get to learn how things really work, and I really want to hang on to this awesome pocket dimension that I had found. Pocket Dimension! Get yours today!

Also a lot of time in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, trying to cap that crap off. You know, when you ignore absolutely everything that was added for this game, it's really just more enjoyable Assassin's Creed business. Lot of fun, jumping and stabbing. I just wish the new stuff didn't suck so bad. I accidently had to do the tower defense game again, and it was just...awful. The difficulty curve is way off and the camera angle makes no sense. I also did another stage of the first-person platformer they thought would be a good idea, and boy oh boy, really? First-person platformer? And it's full of all kinds of wacky little fidgets, like placeable blocks and null zones and bleh. And don't get me started how little I care about bombs.

But enough about things that suck! Because the core gameplay is still Assassin's Creed, and old man Ezio is still a baller. Ezio decides to stab the crap out of this guy because the prince told him to. So he sneaks into this base full of dudes and kills him, only for this guy to say, "Hey, I was totally on your side, stupid." WHOOPS! So Ezio breaks the news to the prince, who's all, welp, that sucks, and then Ezio goes to have a picnic with his lady friend, then goes to some dumb water puzzle place and gets the last disc of Altair's dumb life.

And if you thought Ezio was old balls, holy crap you should see how ancient Altair is in this last memory in which he takes back the assassin homeland from some jerk. Altair has been banished for two decades, that is, 20 years after he was already pretty old and had adult sons, which means he's got to be pushing 80. He is so old in fact that he can't vault off stuff anymore, and will occasionally cough into his arm, it is sad. He can still suplex a mother though, as he just walks up and kills a few more guys for fun, and eventually shoots the stupid jerk with a gun. Which, when you think about it, is a big fucking deal on account of it being the 12th century. Guns aren't really a thing yet. Where did you get that, Altair?

Guild Wars 2, FTL, Dungeons of Dredmor, Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Screwing around on the computer, logged into Guild Wars 2 and thought about doing Halloween stuff and realized, "nah." Also managed to die pretty early in FTL, just big old explosion, poor me.

So, I decided to dig in deeper in Dungeons of Dredmor, check out some of the cool mods that apparently exist. I had managed to crash my program twice doing this, which isn't super cool, but in I went, and manage to get to the third floor before I die somehow! I think I stepped on a trap. Stupid traps. But I am liking this a lot, I especially am pretty cool with the crafting system, although I'd like it better if things were more frequent, and have never been a fan of potions. Screw potions.

Then, on a whim, I thought, "Hmm...that new Assassin's Creed game comes out pretty soon. Should I finish the last game?" Before I have finished thinking, it is in the Xbox and I am playing it. Ezio started a riot and then walked into a place and didn't kill anyone! Come on Ezio! Do your job. But I find a disc after being a dick to some templars who are enjoying a whitewater rafting trip, and get to see Altair's wife get stabbed! Did you ever remember that he got married? I had forgotten as well.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Terraria

I was looking for something to do, so I jumped back into Assassin's Creed multiplayer, and spend about thirty minutes trying to stab dudes. I did okay, not great, people's current game isn't that good, I kept on spotting people right away. There was this one guy who I thought was playing like a jackass, but he was apparently gaming the system, because he always finished first with twice as many points as everyone else. Interesting. I'm also glad that the stupid stun-and-poison trick is no longer in vogue, I hated that. It's back to basics as usual.

Also dug some more in Terraria. I've started from scratch, which is kind of a dumb plan, because now I am frustrated with how long it takes to dig. It's so slow you guys, and water kinda makes things awful. But it's been so long since I've played that I look at everything my main guy has and am just confused.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Draw Something

I have taken back Constantinople from the Templars, and have sent agents to take care of a few other cities too. It is amazing how poorly-managed the Assassins were before Ezio showed up to get them back into shape. I mean, we have literally a single den in all of the Fertile Crescent? Get it together guys. Anyway, building up my stock in the city and beyond, which is hard for a dumb reason. Every time you buy a place, the Templars notice, which makes sense, but is obnoxious. And pointless, considering all I have to do to get them not to care anymore is conspicously walk up to a herald, give him a hundo, and we’re back to nobody caring. And I definitely don’t want the notice to hit full, because then I’ll be forced to play that crappy tower defense game. So, interesting attempt, but stupid.

I also did enough defragging of the Animus to take a little past walk in a ridiculous first-person platforming section, which didn’t offer any backstory that we didn’t already know about or couldn’t have inferred. It is all miss with the new stuff, and I really hope they are gone once again when we get to III. I should play some multiplayer, remind myself why this was worth buying.

I have also been screwing around with a iPhone app called Draw Something, in which you draw something and try to get someone else to guess what it is. I remember at one point in my life being good at Pictionary. I mean, at least competent. I was wrong. Oh, people can still get the gist, but it is the ugliest art you ever will see. I am just awful at this.

What I Played Today: March 2

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

I continue to try and get through this thing. It is tougher going than I expected, because I am pretty bored with the story. There’s no real conflict here; at least in the first two featuring Ezio he had a villain that he was chasing after, someone who responsible for really screwing the assassins over. Here, he’s just kinda hanging on in Constantinople, hunting down some boring laserdiscs. Searching out Altair’s old eight-tracks isn’t exactly riveting, and the Altair memories are basically filling in blanks that nobody cares about. (Oh no, some guy we don’t know or recognize dicked around with the Apple of Eden and almost died? Well, let me get my pants on!) It doesn’t help that the way history is taught in the Western World just kinda turns a huge blind eye to the part of the world that we’re exploring, so that I have no context at all, unlike the other games. I mean, I think I’ve heard the name Suleiman before, but I could not tell you why he’s important. Oh, only the most important figure in the entire Ottoman empire? Thanks a lot, Mr. Jorgensen. That might have been interesting to learn. But I’m sure watching that video about the Civil War a third time was a more useful application of our time.

What I Played Today: March 1

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Magic: The Gathering, Assassin's Creed: Revelations

I have switched up my game! I have adjusted from magic/thief to magic/warrior, and it's a good change, because while the special abilities of my off-class are pretty much the same, the added defensive benefits are really helping out, especially since I have acquired some gear that is great for the magic/warrior class. The longsword may be marginally slower, but deals at least twice as much damage as those dumb knives.

I have finished the House of Ballads chain, and because everyone else is pretty much dead, they put me in charge, which isn't that big of deal, except occasionally when I talk to a fae, they get really uptight and bow and stuff. It is nice that they acknowledge that I'm a person of stature...of course, I'm never allowed to boss them around, but at least they say, "Hey, it's you!"

A few games of Magic: The Gathering, and I can't help but notice how absolutely fair this game is. So well balanced. By that I mean I lose a lot. I have no idea what I'm doing, but for reason I keep coming back to this computer game, because it's quick and easy and itches my CCG niche pretty well.

There is quite a bit of buzz about Assassin's Creed as of late, including confirmation that those not-so-subtle clues laid out in the DLC of Brotherhood are totally coming true and it's going to be awesome. So I figure it's time to catch up, and I played some missions in Revelations. Ezio is still old as shit, and he is totally going to sleep with this redhead. But before that, he needs to hang out with this prince, and I got to do this awesome mission where I wandered around with a lute, occasionally cluing in my assassin friends that they should totally kill the guy I'm pointing it. It was cute, especially since all the songs boiled down to, "I am terrible at playing this song." Heh.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations

"It has been a long time, templar." I stabbed a bit today. It was okay. In one game that went poorly, there was some guy who seemed to teleport all over the place, I wasn't sure if he was cheating (somehow) or if it was just bad lag, but it bugged me enough that I switched to a different lobby and then everything went a lot better.

What I Played Today: December 14

Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Multiplayer! As usual, I started strong, and then my game just fell apart, mainly because I would notice that my game was falling apart. There's a new pack of characters out for a bit of change, which features a pirate, a lady pirate, a scared teenager, and some jackass in full armor. They're okay. I do like that all the customization options are fully available for these four models, but it makes me slightly worried that they'll use this method for the rest. Don't know why. I don't have to buy them.

But yeah, was doing great, then I had three really crappy games in a row, and I was done. Starting to try to vary my strategies a little more, really use what I got, and I realize my current sets are kinda garbage. I think I tried to set them up to be good for when my situation changes mid-game, but I don't have a real reliable set for when I keep losing or when I'm hot. Gotta fix that.

I did get to use minor hack a number of times, however, which is pretty awesome. Sure, you don't really get any bonuses, but I like the feeling that I blew that guy's mind by just straight up killing him without warning. Now I just need to do well enough to get the real version, which lets you kill anyone. ANYONE!

What I Played Today: December 11

Le Havre, Assassin's Creed: Revelations

I hadn't played Le Havre in forever, so I set it up to see if I could remember how to play. The answer is kinda! I still like the layers of give and take and resource management, although I must have been doing something wrong, because I was leaving this huge pile of fish just sitting on the dock. Seems unsanitary. I did alright though, got a better score than the first time I played solo, although still a good 30 points behind my best.

Some multiplayer today, in which I didn't do a very good job of stabbing anyone. Sorry, imaginary Internet people! I did not murder you as well as I hoped!

What I Played Today: December 4

Rift, Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Played a bit of Rift today! Just hung around, did some more Ember Isle stuff, just killing things that are just a little too strong. I mean, I know this is meant for people who have been playing for a while and are geared up enough, but the fact that you can't get any gear on the island makes it slightly impossible. I mean, I've got enough gear to go into raids right now, and I'm having trouble taking out these mobs. Good money on this island though.

Also some multiplayer, and I was either doing very poorly on the winning team, or rocking completely in free for all. Or playing corruption, which I don't count as here or there. Guess I'm just not a team player. Assassinate still manages to be fun, despite the fact that I used to really hate this mode. I think it's because nobody really knows how to play yet. I mean, I occasionally think I'm being super obvious, and I still am not getting spotted. But it's fun! I hit level 20, which gave me 40 uPlay points, which I used to unlock the Knight. He's okay, I don't know why he's that big of deal. But hey, level 20.

What I Played Today: December 3

Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Scrabble, Time's Up, Panic Station

Did a little bit of Assassin's Creed, tried the single player. It was frustrating, because the tower defense levels suck, and all of the stupid templar bases have these little rooms on the outside in which they put a couple of assholes with guns, who are hard to kill and usually see you pretty much instantly, and shoot you to death. I don't like that. Also saw the first Altair level, which takes place before Assassin's Creed proper, and for some reason the Assassin's base is being attacked. Which doesn't make any goddamn sense, because the driving action of the first Assassin's Creed is that Altair messes up and reveals the location of the Assassin's base, for which he is punished, but if the Templars knew where it was the entire time... I don't know, it just seems tacked on, and I am sick and tired of bases always being attacked.

At a party, I played Scrabble on the iPad, which was pretty neat. You have your own personal tile rack on your iPhone, and when it's your turn, you fling the tiles upward on your phone screen, and they show up on the iPad, and it's pretty awesome. Hurray technology.

Two-thirds of a game of Time's Up, which went alright. It went pretty fast, considering. I got to do the dance from Pulp Fiction, which was pretty fun.

After dinner, Panic Station was played, and then, after making a dozen mistakes, started over and replayed. This game has a lot of rules, lot more than it should have, and I didn't explain them well enough so we just hit the reset button and tried again. One interesting thing about both games is that the original infected was not I thought it was. Maybe I was just kinda stupid.

Anyway, once we got to the real game, not the practice game, it was going well, we revealed the hive, and then things started sliding downhill. After avoiding it for a while, eventually an infection slipped through the crack, and then in quick succession everyone but me was a bad guy and I was boned. One interesting thing that happens is after the fourth infection, the two humans, who knew they were in trouble, figured they could totally do it if they could just dodge one more infection. And then, when a trade was forced, the other player completely whiffed it and got herself infected without thinking, because she forgot she needed to trade a gas can to avoid getting stung. So instead she just rolled up to me and shot my character in the face. It was not awesome.

What I Played Today: December 1

Assassin's Creed: Revelations

I logged into the multiplayer today, and stabbed some guys. It was pretty fun, I went up a couple of levels. I got an achievement for playing all the game modes, so I guess I've done that. For some reason chest capture still exists, and it's as dumb as it was before, but at least it's great for completing a bunch of multikill achievements. At one point I was hanging out in a pile of hay and leaping out every five seconds to take a guy out. It was a bit manic.

What I Played Today: November 19

Saints Row the Third, Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Back in the Assassin's Creed multiplayer some more. The metagame has already gotten away on me. I did not do well today. For one thing, I noticed something deeply disturbing about Deathmatch; all the NPCs are played by characters that are not being played by players...so...it's really easy to tell when another player is around. I don't think I like this! What might have hurt my experience with particular Deathmatch is that someone has a shit microphone that was picking up background sound, and the game is such that whenever you are standing close to someone you hear what's pumping through their mic, so...for the majority of the game, I hear just the constant warble of the ocean. It was annoying.

Also played a lot of Saints Row the Third, in which I did a lot of stuff, moving things along. I've met my new crew, did all their dumb activities, and have met the real bad guy. I...think. I have no idea who the real bad guy is in Saints Row games. I still felt the huge tonal difference inbetween the zany and over the top action scenes and the cutscenes. Death still means something in this game, and it's terrible. I felt a bit of a disconnect during the link between Acts 1 and 2, but it picks up quickly, and I'm liking it. I think my favorite dumb activity was the one where I had to drive around town with a tiger. A TIGER!

What I Played Today: November 18

Assassin's Creed: Revelations

I got online today, played some multiplayer. Just playing, just playing.

What I Played Today: November 16

Assassin's Creed: Revelations

I played mostly multiplayer today, and there I played mostly team games, because I couldn't find a good free-for-all server for my life. I did play a few new modes, specifically escort mode, in which one team tries to prevent some NPCs from being killed while they wander around the map, and the other tries to kill them. It's weird because it's stupid easy to kill the NPC, but you are almost always going to die immediately afterwards, as the other team is almost always lurking nearby, if not adjacent to the escort. So it takes some tricky business to make the kill count, and you got to do it fast. I don't know, it's okay. I am such a team player though, because I will always revive a friend if I can...mainly because that's an extra 50 points, and I'll most likely get an accolade for it. So it's selfish, sure, but let's get that score up, huh?

What I Played Today: November 15

Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Saint's Row the Third

I was sick today! Like actual "had trouble getting out of bed" sick, not "sure is convenient there are two games I want to play out today" sick, but man, it was sure was convenient there were two games I wanted to play that came out today. So, once I could manage, I dragged myself to the Gamestop, picked those up, and plopped down in front of the TV to drink water and play games.

First on the docket was Assassin's Creed: Revelations. So, Ezio is off to Istanbul this time around. Or Constantinople, or Kostantiniyye. The city with a lot of names. He's there because he went back to the little village from Assassin's Creed, and found a crapton of templars there, as well as a door that he needs to collect keys to open. Because if Ezio isn't collecting things, he is not living. These were all hidden by Niccolo Polo, and we needed a reason for Ezio to be there. Of course, the real reason we're in Constantinople is because Desmond broke his brain and is now in a coma, and they just connected him to the Animus because they couldn't figure out what else to do. He's stuck on Animus Island, a holding screen, and he's got to "finish up" his memories with both Ezio and Altair so that his brain can figure out they aren't all the same guy and he can be normal again, and Subject 16's consciousness is there to help. It feels very Inception, I'm waiting patiently for Ezio to find an ancient Animus and then they can go deeper. BWWWAAMM.

BUT! Mainly we're sticking with Ezio, who is getting a new cast of friends, including an assassins guild that's helping him out, and a hot chick that he might finally get with to ensure he actually passes on his genes, like he's supposed to. There's a lot of old stuff carried over, and a few new things, such as bomb crafting, which is okay at best, and a tower defense mode, which I hate. Okay, I don't "hate" it, but it feels super unnecessary and fair too different than the standard gameplay to be offensive. I'm still getting my feet off the ground, learning all there is and whatever, and nothing to talk about, except for this one part, in which Ezio is chatting up his new lady friend, and when she asks who the hell he is, he responds, "The most interesting man in your life." He doesn't always drink beer, you see.

After completing a hidden zone (also still don't like these), I switched to Saint's Row the Third, which is kinda crazy. It starts with a mock bank robbery, or a real one (who knows), with a ridealong actor, because he's going to be in a movie about the Saints. You do this entire segment while wearing a giant bobblehead of Johnny Gat and voice modulators. At one point you are asked by police to autograph and then put down your gun. So, it's setting the right tone right away. In one mission you actually dive out of a plane, catch your friend, dive back into the plane, dive out again, and catch your friend one more time. This happens in the first hour of play. The game is all kinds of goofy fun, although it's a bit harder than I'd like, it really throws some nonsense fights at you first thing, so prepare for cover. I've advanced to the point where you set up a sweet new pad and go through all the introduction to all the activities, and...I don't know, don't have a lot to say at this point. I'm going to like it, I know that much.

Then it's back to Assassin's Creed for the multiplayer, and oh son, this is so much better. They really wangled the system to be more friendly, adding more modes, abilities, and customization options, as well as a storyline! The starting experience is a lot better, you now have access to two full ability sets as default, so you aren't running dry, and after a certain point you can start crafting your own. There's a currency system in play, and you need to buy all your abilities, as well as your new looks and weapons and other stuff. It's not that big of deal though, as you get currency easily and you won't be wanting if you fail to buy a certain thing (the cost of a full set of abilities will likely be easily achieveable before level 50, and the game goes far far beyond that). But the biggest deal for me is that there's more achievement in each game, and you can just keep rolling in the same server if you want to. No more having to worry about getting into a game, and you can slip from mode to mode easily, as the next game on the server is put up to a vote. And more importantly, modes that I used to hate have been vastly improved, so now I am willing to play just about anything.

Before I go on and on, first some basic gameplay changes that improve things greatly. In addition to everyone having access to similar ability sets from the start, so they know what's happening, they've changed scoring when it comes to the actual kills. First, you don't start as incognito, but as discreet. You have to perform some simple actions to get full points for a kill, really setting up the kill. So people who smash and grab earn a lot of less than people who carefully plan their actions. Second, if you know someone is coming at you, you can stun as normal, but if you weren't quite fast enough and they hit kill at the same time, you'll instead execute a contested kill, which nukes their bonus, makes them super obvious, and nets the killed 100 points. This is amazing. It really levels the field and requires people to pay attention and be even sneakier. I cannot talk about how great it feels to get an honorable death. I still died, and that sucks, but I saw you coming, and therefore I get rewarded as well.

Also, two modes have catapulted to favorite: Deathmatch and Assassinate. Deathmatch is a new mode in which the compass is gone, but the area is much smaller (this was the mode they were showing at PAX, which they failed to explain). So, you have less places to hide, but no real clue where your target is, and have to check for player tells to sort it out. It's nice and subtle and fun. The other is assassinate, which I used to just hate in Brotherhood, that was improved here by the changes to gameplay, and me finally noticing one thing I just didn't catch the first time I tried the mode, the half-compass that tells you in general where someone is. With this, you can tell when someone is nearby and in what direction, but that's not enough info to really tell who they are, especially if they are doing it right. I'm not sure if the fact that the metagame has also effectively reset also helped me enjoy this more (I had a couple of games of this in which it seemed nobody but me know how to play). But I like Assassinate now, had a few great games, and can't wait to get needlessly sucked into this again.

What I Played Today: August 27

Elder Sign, Word Fighter, Legend of the Five Rings, Spy Party, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Wildstar, Penny Arcade: Gamers vs. Evil, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Gears of War: The Board Game, Burger Time

Another day, started this one a bit slowly. After I got started, I moved directly to the Fantasy Flight booth, because I couldn't quite believe they were actually there. I played a game of Elder Sign, which I don't think we were playing right, but I enjoyed it, it's a nice, crunchy dice game. Lot of options.

I played a quick game of this new thing I've heard about, Word Fighter. It's a word find game with a few good twists, chief among them that each player uses the same board, so it really is based on how quickly and effectively you find words. Also got roped into trying Legends of the Five Rings, which is pretty much exactly how I remember it, confusing and overly complex without explaining why. But hey, I won and I got free cards.

I got to play a couple of rounds of Spy Party, and it was awesome except for the part where I lost. I had trouble finding the guy while I was the sniper, and I was super obvious when I was the spy, but I like this game a lot, so I hope that there is something resembling an actual release or beta here in the future.

A short line for Assassin's Creed: Revelations, so I stepped in and soaked in the new details. Chief among them is that the radar is gone, so you'll have to find your target your own dang self. You still get light-ups if they are visible, so that helps, and it looks like players and NPCs have actual different costumes? Anyway, the fact that you have no radar makes a lot of elements in the game different, but I think I like it. I look forward to playing it.

Also took a look at Wildstar. It's a MMO, sure, but the look is pretty clean, and I like the dodge mechanic and I like the path system they are crafting, where you decide what type of quests you want to do a lot of. That's neat. I signed up for the beta, we'll see.

Pretty sure we played Penny Arcade at some point. That game got so much play, which makes the right amount of sense, but I don't remember this particular game. That evening after a panel, we sat back down and played a couple of games of Betrayal at House on the Hill, which went fine. I was the traitor in the last game, and my job was to just wait it out and let the bomb explode, and there were no rules saying that I couldn't interfere with the mission, so I just parked my avatar in places where there would be a lot of traffic and activated the music box I got at one point, which requires players to pass a sanity check or lose their turn. With this shutting down the majority of the players, I managed to win, but it felt like cheating. There is so much weirdness to the basic structure of this game, with the haphazard mansion exploration first half the game, and the goal oriented but really uncertain second half. I don't know.

We also grabbled a copy of the Gears of War board game demo box, and gave it a try, and everyone hated it but me. The mission required us to close up these holes on the map, which we could only do with a die roll. Now, the math says that it's about a 60% chance that we'll get what we need with a die roll, but the actual game saw us throwing six grenades and not once getting the result we needed to close a single hole, and there were five of them! So, after a few people fell down, and we played a bit defensively, we managed to kill all the enemies (having kinda forgotten to full read cards that would have spawned more enemies), we just said we were done and packed up. I still want to play more, it seems both simple and crunchy, but it does have a few problems, and it just isn't in the wheelhouse of my usual group of players. Looks like it's sold out at the con itself, so I guess buying it now isn't an option anyway.

And then we went to get omelets as large as a dog's head, and there I played a game of Burger Time really poorly. I forgot I had salt.
