What I Played Today: June 6

Super Mario Galaxy 2

The playing of Super Mario Galaxy 2 continues, and the game continues to toy with me in the last world, where I’m constantly trying to rush towards the final boss and keeps putting up roadblocks. First I need 60 stars to continue, then I have to defeat a mildly difficult area, then I have to get 65 starts, and then another difficult area, and now I have to get 70 stars! This kind of teasing is getting ridiculous. I mean, in every other Mario game you only needed 60 stars before you faced Bowser, and they were a lot easier to get in the earlier free-roaming Mario games. In this game there are more areas to explore, and a good 40 percent of the stars that I’ve seen so far are either hidden or attached to comets. Each area only has two stars at most that you can reliably attempt to get, and most areas only have three stars period, which means you need to clear 25 whole areas to get to Bowser. That seems a bit excessive, especially considering the difficulty is a bit higher than before. But I guess it wouldn’t be an expansion if it wasn’t harder in some way.

Caesary, Super Mario Galaxy 2

For some reason, I started one of those idle browser games today, mainly because it was attached to Kongregate, so they weren’t getting any information that they weren’t already getting, and I’m not going to be spending any money anyway, so let’s see what happens. It’s pretty bland, but there are a lot of quests, and they have achievements attached, so I’m trying. Still, mildly engaging.

I’m also in the final galaxy for Super Mario Galaxy, ready to fight Bowser for the last time. I feel a bit miffed that there aren’t eight worlds, because the way they set it up I was expecting that, but hey, what can you do?

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Just more plugging along with Super Mario Galaxy 2. I made it through World 4, and I must say how bizarre it is that these Worlds contain mutliple Galaxies, which in themselves contain small planetoids with their own center of gravity. Should each area containing a bunch of galaxies be called a Universe? I mean, nostalgia is nice, but this doesn’t make any sense.

Bowser is also doing that thing where each boss fight with him is exactly the same only slightly harder. You know, Bowser, you’re more likely to win if you vary your attacks, instead of doing the exact same thing only with slightly more power. I know how to beat you after the first time, man. Come on, what else are you doing? Jerk.

Persona, Super Mario Galaxy 2

I played a bit of Persona today, ran around a convinced some demons that I wasn’t that big of deal and they should hand me a spell card, whatever the hell that is. I’m current stuck in a maze and I think I’m really close to a boss fight, so we’ll see how that is. The game seems pretty easy so far, I don’t get hit very hard and even if I’m fighting something nasty, I’ll just politely ask it for some Twinkies or something.

I also played some Super Mario Galaxy 2, because it’s there. There was a tough boss fight that required me to use Yoshi to blow up some big damn domes. Only problem being that Yoshi has the same trait he’s had since his reveal; whenever’s he’s hit, he’ll start running away. So you needed to make sure you never got hit while avoiding Bullet Bills and laser grids, and collapsing platforms and...well, I passed it anyway. The hidden levels are also proving to be obnoxiously difficult as well. No cookie cutter level yet though, which is too bad, because I loved that level.

What I Played Today: May 29

I'm on my way out the door, so I'll tell you what I played this morning, mainly the latest, Super Mario Galaxy 2, which is about as good as they keep on talking about, although it is more a retelling of the events of Super Mario Galaxy, rather than a sequel. It plays exactly as you think it will, with jumping and jivving and what not. Still pretty decent level designs; it's obvious what you're supposed to do without feeling cramped and nitpicking.

Two things though: I hate the world map, because I've been done with world maps since 1995. It has this weird thing where you can get like 10 star bits at certain points of the map, which is stupid, because you can get 10 star bits just by running for about a minute in a regular level. Also, the main NPC from the first one, the intriguing and mysterious Rosalina, has been replaced with the fat and boringly purple star child named Lubba. Why? Was Nintendo afraid of the doujinshi? It just doesn't feel as interesting moving around the main hub, especially since it creepily looks like Mario's head.

Anyway, I'll talk to you folk after the weekend.
