What I Played Today: May 3

Magic 2015

I played a few games of Magic: The Gathering, and I kind of hate the goddamn hell out of CCGs? Like, I never have any goddamn luck? I never get the counter card I need, even though I KNOW it's in the deck? What is going on? I'm playing against a computer. Nothing is achieved by making me feel frustrated. Changed based on my wants and needs, video game.

What I Played Today: Blerp

I've been behind, I apologize. Let me tell you about a couple of things;

I got the new Persona 4 game, and it's a silly dancing game. I've played exactly one dance sequence so far, not sure what I'm waiting for, the aesthetic is really good. Everyone is wearing a yellow bandana somewhere, it took me like two hours to figure this out. Fun fun.

I got all the elements for Super Mario Maker, and now I have no idea what to do! I read this article where all the most popular Super Mario Maker levels are all stupid gimmicks and garbage (that was my interpretation), so I don't want to just shovel hard garbage into it, you know?

I played some Magic Duels, that's a game. How about that?

They released Shop Heroes on iOS, which I have decided to switch to, because it's nice to be able to play while on the phone and I'm bored. The interface is kinda small, but there's also a Facebook version tied to it, so...there we go.

ANYWAY, I'll try to be more interesting soon.

What I Played Today: August 1

Magic Duels

There's apparently a new computer game Magic: The Gathering game and it's...(sigh)...FREE. Sure, it has full deckbuilding, and sure, there aren't that many cards to collect, and sure, it's very pretty and smart, but I just don't want to deal with it. I don't want to buy boosters. I don't want to hunt for multiple copies for that one card that brings everything together. I just can't. I already hate playing Hearthstone for that reason. Oh, also that I keep losing for no reason. There should be more collectible card games in which you only have to make ten decisions, not 40. I like those games.

Magic: The Gathering

I played plenty of games of Magic: The Gathering, because that's what I do, yo. There's this really really tough encounter in the expansion, which would be fine if it wasn't the FIRST encounter of the expansion. Come on, guys. At least give me access to the new decks, instead of gating them behind this encounter that I could literally recite for you right now.

What I Played Today: July 8

Guild Wars 2, Magic: The Gathering, Civilization V

I did something odd in Guild Wars 2 today; I was hopeful and disappointed that the new update didn't roll out yet, so I snooped around at some achievements, and apparently there was something called a mini-dungeon? So I went in there and it was a bunch of jumping puzzles and I kind of hated it. I didn't even get to the boss, because I was sick of getting knocked off of things.

Also played some Magic 2014. I had forgotten about the Eldrazi! Those things are nasty. They are huge, colorless creatures that force the opponent to sacrifice 2-4 permanents EVERY TIME THEY ATTACK! Holy moly. I also got the sliver deck. Hurray slivers. They sure aren't boring.

Also, at about 11:30, the brand new Civilization V expansion came out, and I had to get in on that. They added a bunch of stuff that I didn't understand, a new cultural goal and trade routes, and more civilizations, and holy god somehow it looks really good. Like, the game looks physically different and cleaner. Exciting! I made it about 50 turns until I got a little tired, but I really want to dig into this.

What I Played Today: Vacation

Guild Wars 2, Reus, Civilization 5, Magic: The Gathering, Dominion, Le Havre: The Inland Port, Smash Up

I was on vacation, so of course I didn't feel like keeping this updated. Vacation.
I played a ton of fucking Guild Wars 2, because of course I did. I spent maybe the entire week trying to complete the Dragon Bash event so I could get the dumb wings, and then NOT succeeding, because man, screw this one time only events. I understand that they have an incredible commitment to keep adding content to this game, and they are doing a fastastic job, but they are also...doing it too fast? Like...two weeks is not enough time to do everything I want to do, game. I can't be playing every single night, and I have a really hard time getting into a dungeon. I don't know, maybe I need to join the right guild. My current guild is worthless to me.

Also did some more general Steam game, played a bit of Civ 5, waiting impatiently for the new release (should be tomorrow), played some Magic 2014, I think I logged into Reus for a little bit?

And occasionally some people would come over and want to play games. So I played a game of Dominion with the latest Guilds expansion, and man...kind of screw this one? The coin tokens are kind of too powerful. "Oh...I only have five coins in my hand, but I got these three coin tokens that I didn't really work for! Free Province!" But it's what everyone wanted, and they got what they asked for, and now they can suck on it. Also played a game of Le Havre: The Inland Port, which I won somehow, even though I had no resources and my opponent had a full warehouse and three of the buildings that count resources. And a game of Smash Up, which I didn't enjoy that much.

There you have it!

Magic 2014

There's a new Magic game, and because I occasionally want to play Magic, I bought that up! The game is pretty much the same, only with a whole bunch of cards I've never seen before. Apparently in Innistrad there's a whole angry mob subset? It's weird, I remember the days when they were adamant about not publishing the word "Human" on a card, because they didn't want to get into the territory where I card could say, "Sacrifice target human."

But it's still Magic: The Gathering, so I don't have much to say. Although they do have a deck-building component to this, which should be interesting.

What I Played Today: February 16

Team Fortress 2, Magic: The Gathering

A group of people I know play Team Fortress 2 occasionally, and I joined them for a few matches before decided that I goddamn suck at Team Fortress 2 and I wasn't that interested in getting better, so I quit.

Instead I sucked at Magic: The Gathering instead. Maybe not the smartest idea to try and play the unadvanced expansion Simic deck against a fully-loaded revenge deck, because I lost early and often. I do love that snake elf though, it creates such a cool card advantage. Plus, it's a snake elf! What the hell is that?

What I Played Today: September 25

Super Hexagon, Rock Band Blitz, Magic: The Gathering

I beat Hexagon! Now it's time for...Hexagoner. Which is harder. Ug.

Also, Rock Band Blitz, I am DONE with score wars, I cannot win. And Magic: The Gathering, in which I unlocked all the new decks, good for me. Aren't I awesome? Yeah, I thought so.

What I Played Today: September 24

Super Hexagon, Magic: The Gathering, Rock Band Blitz, Persona 4 Arena

So, Super Hexagon suggests that you wearing headphones when you play. It's not a rhytym game, so I couldn't figure out why. The reason they want you to wear headphones is so the game can drive you insane. It is such an intense trip. So much spinning, and lines, and colors, and oh my god my brain is exploding. I'm at 44 seconds on the easiest section. I can do this.

There's a Magic: The Gathering expansion, based around the guilds from Ravnica. I like Ravnica, so of course I bought it and started playing it. I don't know if there's any of the new cards in this though, and why not? Huh? Guys?

Rock Band Blitz, another score war. I am currently winning. I do not expect to be winning by tomorrow. But it's Bandages, so I can play this song over and over without getting tired of it.

Then I booted up Persona 4 Arena and for some reason jumped into Challenge Mode. I've finally getting the hang of the quarter circles, although I still can't figure out how to make a double-quarter circle trigger consistently. Also, Kanji's specials are kind of hilarious. He just goes goddamn apeshit. One of them has him leaping full on onto his opponent and pummeling him, which is brutal. Just awful. Kanji's great.

What I Played Today: September 15

FTL, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Rock Band Blitz, Magic: The Gathering, Coloretto

So, I downloaded this game that I had been anxiously waiting for for what feels like six months, FTL, and it turns out that is actually fantastically good. You are in charge of a ship that is jumping from place to place, running into dudes, fighting other spaceships, and often exploding. While I do see a bit of repeating in the events (stupid six-legged horses), it is pretty entertaining. Trying to unlock each ship and layout is going to consume me for a while.

Tried to pass Dust, failed. I got to the point of no return, and I was just not strong enough. There are so many dang dudes to fight.

Also played some Rock Band Blitz. I took the advice offered in Thursday's post (you can look it up, I'm not your mom), and I was doing okay. I was finding that if I go hogwild with the bottle rocket, I score as many points with my special as I'm getting for playing normally. I'm pretty sure I gold starred something. And yet, still behind that one guy. (shakes fist at that one guy)

Also probably played a game of Magic: The Gathering against the computer, and then played a game of Coloretto online with strangers. Things got weird late into the night.

What I Played Today: August 25

Guild Wars 2, Magic: The Gathering

The early access for Guild Wars 2 has started, and guys, I had forgotten how much I enjoy this game. I had to do some serious downgrading of my video settings to make it run as well as I'd like (I was pulling down 7 FPS. Seven.) But after I got started, I just kinda ran with it. Played through the first few missions, just going at it. I also spent what felt like half-an-hour just running around the city and getting all the locations lit up, for which I got a little present. That was nice of them. But yeah, I'll be playing this for a while, especially since the level cap is 80, I think. That is a very big number! Still kinda concerned that the combat will get repetitive since there are very few skills available, but...I don't know. Probably no reason to get really concerned at this point.

Also played Magic: The Gathering, completed the campaign, killed Nicole Bolas (misspelling intentional). Man, I hate that stupid dragon, he is ridiculous, and I wish they would stop focusing so heavily on his dumb dragon ass. We get it, he's a spooky dragon, whatever.

What I Played Today: August 11

Yoshi's Island, Magic: The Gathering

I remembered that I paid a premium for some free games on my 3DS, so I played one of them. Yoshi's Island is a game with Yoshi in it. It's pretty good.

I also played Magic: The Gathering, the 2013 edition, and it sure was a game where you puts cards on a table. I don't know, it's fun, although this one deck involves just constantly gaining life and doesn't seem to have an endgame in mind. That's unusual.

What I Played Today: June 26

Magic: The Gathering

I played more Magic: The Gathering - Duel of the Planeswalkers 2013: The Legend of Curly's Gold. I beat some more guys and got some new decks. The encounters are still pretty interesting, it's still Magic, that's all everyone.

What I Played Today: June 21

You Don't Know Jack, Magic: The Gathering

Stress gaming. Playing games because I need to. Oh jeez you guys what the hell am I going to do?

What I Played Today: June 20

Magic: The Gathering

The new Magic: The Gathering - Duel of the Planeswalkers is out. Jesus that title is a mouthful. I will admit it is pretty okay! The decks they have constructed for off the bat are pretty good, and the campaign offers both regular fights against constructed decks and "encounters," which are fights against decks with only only one or two cards with a very specific goal, and you need to be able to counter the main theme of that card. Some have flying, there is a deck full of Tims, which is amazing, it was a good idea. If there is not a deck full of Maros, I will be a little sad.

What I Played Today: May 8

Magic: The Gathering

Were you aware that there's a game in which you play cards from a deck and you pretend to be a wizard? No? Well, I played a little bit of it against a computer. I played an angel deck. I lost a lot.

What I Played Today: April 25

Guild Wars, Magic: The Gathering

Whatever, everybody! Let's just pretend there was a blackout last night or something.

What I Played Today: April 6

Magic: The Gathering

Did you guys know that the expansion to Duel of the Planeswalkers: 2012 lets you play as a overlord or whatever the big bad guy is called? Oh man, it is kinda superfun. You guys should try it. Also, the new decks were on sale for like 50 cents a piece, so I totally bought them. I'm not sorry.

What I Played Today: March 30

Magic: The Gathering

I wish I could explain my tendency to waste a half an hour on this game at such a regular interval. Not sure! Anyway, won some fights. That's always nice.
